Hi, Crumden: So if you can spot any disc still in the drive. I realize this is hard to do with a laptop DVD drive, but it's the only thing I can think of. Otherwise, if you are still under warranty, I'd contact Dell about replacing the drive.

Hi Bev, sorry I was too busy the last few days to work on the dimension, would you believe my xps laptop went haywire too! When it rains, it pours.... ha anyway the laptops back to normal now and I got a chance to concentrate on the desktop. Couple of funny things happened along the way, firstly with everything back connected no change to the boot problem, drives are still not recognised. However the sequence lights and POST beeps were...

Well, that is odd, isn't it? Maybe I'll have to question them on that. I didn't even give them any drive sizes before they mentioned the max. I wonder where they came up with that? Thanks for the page. Mike

Yes! Yes! Yes, it worked, Big thank you. One note: The first times I ran the Code 39 was with the Fix It for Me button -- when I went in to repeat this time the Fix for me came up with the same found but could not fix. So, I took the three steps back and punt - did the manual – Eureka! The Drives are proudly in “My Computer” again; and the best part is I tried them and...

CDs not recognized - DVDs work fine
Published (2009-11-28 17:35:00)
The error code indicates a drive failure. It appears the CD laser has failed while the DVD laser is still functioning. It is time to replace the drive. If you are still within the warrenty, contact Dell and they will send a replacement.

Recovering the RECOVERY partition
Published (2009-11-24 09:28:00)
OK - I think I've got it figured out (although I could use some further explanation if anyone knows about this) I was doing some further research, and I read a message about someone who had a similar problem that turned out to be a BIOS setting for the hard drive. I realized, of course, that the only thing that I had changed in this system was the drive itself, so I went into the BIOS to see how it was set up. On this...

Hi, Treming:
See if this thread helps you free up some space.
I'm not sure what you mean by "a hard disk I am connected to wirelessly". Perhaps you are referring to a network file server or another computer on your home network. In order to use that as a recovery drive, you'll need to map it to a local drive .
Hope that helps!

Hi, powerchilango:
What software came with your system? If you buy a BR drive, it should come with BR playing software.
PowerDVD is just about the cheapest player out there for BR, only $50 or so.

You said, "I'm thinking the public ought to know brand-new systems being sold as having Blu-Ray ROM capability can't even play a movie."
I agree completely! I've been having this problem since the summertime. May, really. The help process was basically identical to yours, and the same error message comes up. Vista cannot handle it, and they're still selling systems like this.
It's a ...

The first thing to try is updating the driver.
It might be an overheating issue if that doesn't work. Nvidia graphics cards tend to run hot and if the fans are not running optimally then that could be causing the problem. I had a very similar issue and had to have not only my graphics card replaced but the motherboard and system fans too.

Sounds like something is scratching the discs - there is no lubricant in the drive.

Have you cracked it open yet? If both the CD and the hard drive don't work, it's entirely possible you have a cable that got loose, or one of the controllers on the motherboard went bad. If you have extra, try plugging the hard drive into another port on the motherboard.

The error codes refer to a faulty hard drive. You'll need a 2.5" 9.5 mm SATA notebook drive to replace the failed unit.

What size is the second IDE hard drive?
Have you set the second hard drive's jumpers to "Cable Select" [CS] and connect it to the middle connector on the primary IDE cable?
Is the second IDE hard drive formatted, partitioned and assigned a drive letter using XP's Disk Management?

Hi, Deezie:
Please go to the CD/DVD FAQ (link below) and follow the instructions under " code 39 error". That should fix this problem. If it does not, then you should run the Dell diagnostics on both drives. Let me know if you need instructions for that.

Install Service Pack 1 minimum and then make a second partition - and keep backups, since without BIOS support, the is a strong possibility you'll have spontaneous data loss somewhere down the road.

You can, but you'll need a mounting bracket and a dual-drive IDE cable.

You've two options:
If you have an internal floppy drive, load the SATA install driver onto it, press F6 during the XP blue-screen boot process, and load the driver.
Or, make a slipstreamed XP CD with the required SATA driver on it. Easy way is to use something like BartPE to do the job for you.
The SATA driver you need is here:

The hard drive has failed. Replace it with a standard, 3.5" EIDE (NOT SATA) desktop drive.
