If you have the Windows Disc and the Drivers and Utilities that will allow you to do a complete clean install (including reformatting the hard drive). The basic install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Intel chipset drivers (3) Install device drivers such as sound, video, ethernet, etc. HERE is the Dell reinstall instructions.

Will escalate this. My assumption is all have tried this? * Load the Latest Bios * On restart go into the bios * On the Main screen, press F9 to load the Setup Defaults * Open Boot * Make sure your Hard Drive is first in the list and Optical Drive is second * Exit the Bios saving your changes * Once into windows, shut down * Power on. Do you still get the error? If yes, shutdown * Disconnect all USB devices except for mouse and keyboard *...

Hi, myming: No, you need to run each downloaded file in order to install the update. Find the folder where you downloaded and run each one from that location.

Boot into the bios (F2) and make sure the system is indeed seeing all your hard drives. If not you need to first check the cables to make sure it did not some how work loose.I would suggest you unplug it and reconnect it.

If you trust Intel's specs on their chipsets, the 945P will support only 4 GB. The earliest chipset listed that supports 8 GB is the 955X. Assuming that information is true, nothing Dell could do with the BIOS would allow this computer to support 8 GB of RAM.

Any psu will be fine, as long as they're ATX. I bought a Corsair, since they have a good reputation of making power supplies that don't blow up.

Is the power button LED, solid green, blinking green, solid amber, blinking amber, or off?
Check the sequence of the diagnostic lights on the back panel of the case.
The 8400 Diagnostic Guide and Troubleshooter is HERE .
Are there any error messages, or 'Beeps'?

The video card you mentioned (GTX260) has dual link DVI port which can support a DVI to HDMI converter. This converter was shipped with my DELL when I purchased it.

I've found Darik's Boot and Nuke, very effective for erasing all the data from a hard drive.
See HERE
It's a funny name, but a good product.

Hi there ~
My one and only concern is static in the headphone jack on top of the machine. It's not a *dire* concern, because I do have alternatives available, but I was wondering if anyone had found a fix for it.
Thanks for starting a new thread, Jon. Good to "see" you again.

I ordered my studio xps 8000 on 10/11 and the original est. delivery date was 10/26. This was delayed to 11/2 and then again to 11/9.
I called customer support and they were really unhelpful, just said the expected lines and would not upgrade my shipping. I noticed the xps 8000 at all my area Best Buys. I guess they are busy building for them and all of us internet orders are paying for it...

Chris,
We never did get an answer in the old forum about if/when Dell is going to give us a faster BIOS for the XPS 730. BIOS 1.05 is terribly slow, as I am sure you know. What news?

Did you follow the correct sequence when installing OS to brand new hard drive? You might have forgotten Desktop System Software and the chipset.

HERE is the Dell replacement disc order form for US customers. But there is no "restore" disc, you will get the Windows XP disc and a Drivers and Utilities disc with all the hardware drivers on it.
If you have photos and music on this hard drive, they are probably lost, as when you do the new install you will have to reformat the hard drive and then install which will delete any user ...

Run BIOS setup (Press F2 before Windows tries to load) and look for Integrated Peripherals. The "Options Field" should show you the SATA settings. You may need to change it to RAID Autodetect/ATA so you don't have to load the SATA drivers. Save the change and exit setup.
As for help installing Vista, you probably should post the rest of your questions on the Microsoft OS forum, instead ...

The green light on the motherboard only means that it's getting power from the power supply. Is the power button green or amber, steady or blinking?
There are 4 diagnostic LEDs on the rear of the tower. If not all green, look up the error codes here .
After a year in storage, it's likely the motherboard battery is dead, so you may need to replace that before you can do any trouble-...
