Sound Driver
Published (2009-12-28 15:04:00)
The link I have in my second post is the direct link to the sound driver download. That is as far as we can get. Click on the BLUE "Download" button. If it won't download for you, have a friend do it and see if they get the download and if they can they can either burn a CD or put it on a USB memory key for you. DO NOT use the Dell Download manager or click the Add to...

No Sound

Do you now have the speaker icon in the taskbar? If you look in "Device manager" do you see any hardware that lists a problem? Visit the Windows update page and choose the option "Custom". See if any updates are provided. You now seem to have sound, you may need to just adjust some settings.

Dimension 2400 soundmax...
Published (2009-12-27 20:58:00)
EDIT: Before working inside your computer, follow the guidance found here: Before You Begin . One last thing to do, and then I think you are left with going back through the steps already taken to be sure one hasn't been missed. The Dimension 2400 is now old enough that the NVRAM (CMOS) battery may have low voltage. If you haven't replaced it, you should do that at this...

No Sound
Published (2009-12-25 15:36:00)
well, i thought it did. i can play things such as songs but no system sounds or sound from the net. when i open the sounds and audio devices properties screen, under the volume tab it says no audio device. if i try to play a system sound i get an error window that says "Windows cannot play the sound %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Error.wav. Your sound card may be in use"

I had to wait until grandkids could tear themselves away from soundless Roblox. I pulled speakers from another computer with working sound and used them on the Dimension 2400. Still no sound. All speakers, etc. are properly connected and powered. The sound passed the diagnostics test with flying colors - there is definitely a functioning sound emitting device in this computer - but it...

Dell E521 - looking to upgrade...

I would get the 9800 GT. It is a good brand and a good card with good reviews. Even though they are both basically the same and Nvidia just made a name change, the 9800 GT is newer and will probably run cooler than any older 8800 GT you might find as they did make some minor changes on the board.

Upgrade Video card on Vostro
Published (2009-12-22 12:32:00)
Hi, I did not think we had any other problem until installing the new card did not solve the problem. I'm afraid I don't know how to boot up in safe mode; I will try the F12 when I find the diagnostic CD (apologies for being rather helpless, I guess I'm at the bottom of a learning curve). Should there be a CD with the card for the driver or do I download one from the net? I will listen for beeps...

Distorted audio on Dimension 3000
Published (2009-12-25 01:49:00)
Thanks for your interest Alexandra, I have tried what you suggested without any change in the audio. I am going to see if I can pick up a later Dell computer tower and system to use with my monitor and kb etc. It is nice to know someone is interested in other peoples problems with computers. Regards Bruce

Audio for Dell 545
Published (2009-12-20 12:47:00)
The HD died (3 days into a new PC!) but that will give me a new factory imaged operating system (vista) and I can try the speakers without any upgrades before doing anything with win 7. That will give me the answer I think and if they work then I can go after Tech Support with a loaded gun! Will post results.

McAfee

McAfee controls the subscription, not Dell. You should have a McAfee icon in the system tray - open it up and see if it shows the expiration date. Not a good idea to go without some kind of protection on the Mini. How often you're on the internet doesn't count - it's where you go that does. One bad click and you're in trouble - whether it's 5 minutes or 5...

Was there a time that the sound worked? Do you recall installing or uninstalling anything around the time that the sound quit working?
The most common reason that the sound quits working on the D2400 is that someone has checked the Mute box on the volume control. Other reasons for the sound to stop working is that the onboard sound has been disabled in the System Setup (reached by ...

To start with the easy stuff ...
Here are the support pages for the 4500 .
Are the speakers plugged into the Green output?
And, Windows needs to be installed in a specific order on Dell systems as listed below ...
Note: Some devices may not function properly if the drivers are installed out of order.
Install your version of Windows.

First question, is the audio bad on both your speakers and a headset? If you haven't tried a headset see if it is also bad with the headset. Or, plug the speakers into something else such as an IPod and see if the sound is good or bad. That will help isolate where the problem is. That is the first step - determining whether it's in the PC or the speakers.

Thanks for the tip as I was having the exact same problem. I updated the driver but now it flickers when I scroll. One thing I noticed is that I am running the 64 bit Win 7 so I downloaded the 64 bit driver but the driver that was on my control panel was a 32 bit. Which one should I have used?

Of the 3 listings, one is not a driver, it's an application. The other 2 are for different sound devices - have to know which you have to get the right one.
If you have the XiFi card, then it's installed in a slot near the bottom of the tower.
If you have the Realtek, it's the standard built-in audio on the motherboard - the jacks plug into the middle near the USB ports.
And sorry, but...

It is always best to meet the recommended video requirements compared to the minimum to have the best experience. Since you did not mention the game, I don't know what that would be. However, either the 6800 or X1600 Pro are low-end and older cards for playing today's games. In order of performance from low to high based on what might work for your system, I would suggest the Nvidia 9500 GT ...

Here's your Service Manual with directions for adding a drive. No caddy needed. It should fit into an empty bay that's the right size. If you bought a hard drive kit, everything you need is included. You need to format the drive according to the directions that came with the drive or check the drive manufacturer's web site.

Since this is in reference to a Laptop, it's best to post this in the Laptop section of the forum. This is the Desktop section.
