When installing GRUB, make sure you do it from WITHIN the chroot. I have found you can get wierd behavior with grub otherwise. This is also why it's necessary to mount /proc and /dev within the chroot before entering it, so that the chroot will have hardware level...

I will put two option lines (with "-" instead of "_") at the end of etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. Again, thanks for all your clarifications. I could have never done this without them. Just to be sure it is not me, but the incredibly scattered state of alsa developement, I checked out more thoroughly the link grege offered ( http://wiki.debian.org/ALSA ) - now that I feel more confident thanks to all your help -...

Installing a desktop environment?
Published (2009-11-24 02:03:00)
It turns out I did have the net-install version. I found an ethernet cable and downloaded KDE. I am now trying to set the wireless up. When I go into "Wireless Network" it says that it can't autodetect the wireless interface. What should I do?

Your post is a bit old now, but I had the same issue with a fairly standard home made enclosure and a Pioneer DVD. I just open and closed the drive and hit try again and it continued on. I think it is a known bug.

Please specify the output of lsusb so we can clarify the status of the linux drivers for the Belkin USB device you have. If you have problems with the kernel, you could try getting a newer version from lenny-backports (kernel 2.6.30.

If you're having issues getting it to boot from CD, do you have access to another Debian machine? I would try installing debootstrap on the other machine, mounting it from another filesystem and using debootstrap to install a minimal installation onto the disk. Once the installation completes, you can chroot into the environment and install the rest of the packages that will make it necessary ...

Depending on which GUI you are using you can make a lot of headway by running something like Code: Select all aptitude install kde-minimal or kde-standard or kde-full. Or you might prefer Code: Select all aptitude install xfce4 or Code: Select all aptitude install gnome-desktop-environment and then you probably want a display manager so Code: Select all aptitude ...

Hi and welcome to the Forum. Installing the desktop of your choice is fairly easy depending on which CD image you have downloaded. You will need one of the full CD's or DVD's to install your DE(desktop Environment) If you want Gnome then the first disk will serve your purpose. However if you would like to have KDE or LDE then you will need to download the respective disk image. In your situation ...
