Almost any home/small office router denies unsolicited incoming connections attempts by default (but check yours because some ISPs do supply poorly configured routers) so a desktop machine behind such a router doesn't need any kind of software firewall. The same router is where port forwarding is configured, if required. If you don't have a router, for example you use a cable modem with a direct connection, then a software firewall...

Great, but you made a sort of workaround (change perms to resolv.conf). DHCP writes to resolv.conf that's why it doesn't keep your changes. The place to look at is /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf There you can add a line like Code: Select all prepend domain-name-server 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220

edit the boot line "init=/bin/bash". Add it as a kernel parameter. That will drop you into a root shell with no passwd required, and you can then modify the password as you see fit using the passwd command. (You'll probably find that / is mounted read only so you'll need to remount it as rw first).

Even I am seeing that warning, when "k8temp" is loaded. After looking at k8temp.c, this problem happens from model 64 onwards, model number could be viewed from "cat /proc/cpuinfo". For my Athlon X2 it is 75. Also the errata 141 is from "page 38" of the following document. support.amd.com/us/Processor_TechDocs/33610.pdf

I've had no problems running wine in lenny. It might help us to help you if you were a little more specific with the issues you are experiencing. "wine won't work"? What are you trying to run? Mass Effect, or Office 2003? What kind of hardware are you using? What video card drivers are you using? How did you install wine? What version of wine are you trying to use? Details, people.

Probably not totally necessary but, not a bad idea either unless you have a router with a firewall. My broadband modem/router has a firewall so I do not run a firewall on my system, but if you don't use a router its probably a good idea to use a software firewall.

Is your VPS configured to use DHCP or is it staticly addressed. This looks like a DNS problem to me. (ie. no DNS server is being assigned)

you know some very weird commands and havent had the idea to search for "debian root password"? mount it, chroot into it and run passwd. if that doesnt work it might be for a reason and should be accepted. a "thing" based on debian may be very much. http://wiki.debian.org/

If you want stable then run stable not testing or sid. With stable and the backports.org repo you can still have rather newer packages.

If all the computers run GNU/Linux then sshfs can be an excellent way to have directories accessible across the LAN. NFS is good too. http://www.howtoforge.com/nfs-server-and-client-de bian-etch http://www.debianadmin.com/mount-a-remote-file-sys tem-through-ssh-using-sshfs.html

Hi, never run e2fsck on mounted partition(s) because it'd result in data loss or corruption. Just unmount the partition and run e2fsck against it. P.S. Instructions how to do it in man e2fsck or in Internet in howtos like this.

Okay, the challenge is to maintain at least one local copy of my remote web and list server files. I have shell access on a Linux box at the remote end, Debian Lenny here. I'd like to work from global questions down to package selection and configuration specifics. I have a strong preference for using GUI's wherever possible, but I doubt I'll get away with that on this'un... I want to keep...

If you tell hwclock that your hardware clock is running utc, it will correct the time it reads to local time before displaying it. If you tell hwclock that your hardware clock is running local time, it will display the actual time it reads without making any correction. Try hwclock --utc --debug --show . Then you will see both the actual time read and the corrected time.
