I used to think of covers bands as lame when I was young. It was originals all the way, with a few crowd pleasing covers just to keep the wasted punters rocking. Now, after a long break from drumming, my current band is playing covers exclusively. Somewhere along the line that snobby anti-covers attitude left me. Everyone in the band has some originals tucked away but most aren't suited to the style we're playing and our singer is a...

Wow--new side business...
Published (2009-11-12 07:23:00)
Hey Crew, I can't believe how lucrative this new sideline of mine has become--buying and selling drums, parts, hardware, cymbals, welding up custom hardware, etc., has turned out to be. Just today I made about $190 on parts and stuff that I had about $44 invested in. It's weird-- the economy is pretty crappy, musicians are starving (not like that's a new thing!) and it seems like drum owners are desperate to "make...

It all depends on a musician's outlook. Some people say, "I will never do (such and such) because that's (for sellouts/for losers/just dumb). To me, those people are close-minded. What got them wanting to play music in the first place? Didn't they, at SOME point in their musical development, learn to play some of the songs they loved? (maybe even play along with recordings of the songs?)...

Not normally. But, does anyone else experience this... I find the throne behind the drum set to be the quietest place on stage. All the sounds of the drums (especially the cymbals) are going away from me and the monitors, etc. (except mine of course) are usually in front of me.

I think the problem here is that there are people who have naturally good timing. However, most musicians don't. But almost all guitar players you talk to will tell you they do! It's of course possible to improve your timing, just practice along to a metronome. It's a lot easier than pitch imo but i am of the belief that anyone can improve both their pitch and timing through practice. Some people...

Good for you man. The business and booking end of music is often overlooked by local bands. You have to do those things and it definitly pays off big time in the long run.
I have been looking into booking agencies to help my main group get more gigs. It can be hard to get gigs and promote yourself without it down in the south. Even with a good press kit. Do you or anyone else here have ...
