I've quit the drums.
Published (2009-12-05 16:41:00)
Eddie, if I had a dollar for every time I've told someone I played drums and they replied something like "You're so lucky. I wish I played an instrument" or "I wish I kept up the piano lessons" I'd be able to buy a meal at a middling restaurant. As Pocket said, it would be a shame to lose the skill. And it doesn't have to be major skills to be worth preserving. I have absolutely rubbish...

I don't see a debate. It is one of many drum beats and has it's place along with those others.

mrchattr...I know you're right and part of this is the friend part of me not being objective. Although, if you heard him play on a night that he didn't have any blatant screw ups...you'd think he was a pretty awesome drummer too. However, in all honesty...his drumming feels like a fancy house built on a foundation of sand...it may seem good as long as the weather is perfect, but even a slight rain can make everything crumble at...

When you say, "practice kit" what exactly do you mean? Is it just rubber pads or such?
Yes, It is good to interact with other musicians, but not completely necessary when just starting out.
There are practice spaces that you can rent. Some have a kit and you bring your own pedals and cymbals. Check around your area.
Finding musicians is best done by networking at school and by checking on ...

How about this?
Complaining neighbours and my own paranoia are forcing me to play quietly - and I love it.
I've noticed this over the last year... I'm developing some really great dynamics. Anybody can hit the drums hard, but it's quite hard to play quietly. I'm learning how to play at an almost inaudible level and it's worked wonders for me.
Anyone else in this ...

It's like a minimalist Keith Carlock setup taken to the extreme.
Works for him, obviously, but those drums would be too low for me to comfortably hit.

I have the Vic Firth iso-phones and they really hurt my ears because of pressure, even after stretching them out. Do all iso-phones press that hard?
If not, which iso-phones should I get?
If all iso-phones press that hard, I'll get regular headphones instead and use earplugs. When using earplugs, should I get half-open or fully closed headphones? Will the music be audible when...

Yup.
Rule of thumb is always the OUT goes to the IN of the next device. :-)

Your drummer has got to do a few things differently ro pretty soon he'll find himself in the unwanted position of playing for nobody, with no calls coming in. I wouldn't want to play in a band with someone who can't fix something simple like this.
He could try to upgrade to a different click that uses different voices for downbeat and backbeat (I have a very basic BOSS Dr. beat that does ...

Careful using them four-letter words, Abe. DogBreath will be pressing the Delet button :)
Good question, though.
I wonder if, in part, it's because jazz is such a minority interest? The stakes are high for those playing it seriously; the future is uncertain, and anything said about it that appears to be undermining the music is a worry.

I know a lot of guys who just love a gig where you do nothing but play brushes, though you are right about it's dwindling popularity. It gets back to what people were saying about the smaller kits. Sometimes it's putting yourself in a position where you have less to work with that can really challenge your creativity: a pair of brushes, a bass drum and a sizzle cymbal.
