I wonder how many of these double bass players that claim they can play over 200 bpm but struggle in the 160bpm range can take their leading foot off the pedal and keep going with the off beat notes on the slave leg (at the claimed top speed)...? =P Playing fast is one thing and hearing and thinking fast is another.

Drumstick Gripping
Published (2009-12-23 18:22:00)
i'm with you about the second joint. my stick ends up between the first and second joint of my forefinger most of the time. when i'm playing a closed roll, it's more on the first joint. when i'm playing hard around the toms it's more on the second joint. i share the grip between the index and middle fingers and i try to hang on loosely. in other words, i don't squeeze with any fingers.

You can start working with a metronome/sequence to help identify any problems you have with tempos. Common trouble spots are speeding up during fills, as well as energetic parts of songs such as choruses and solos. If fills are your problem, keep working with the click to lock in your feel for going around the drums. If 'sitting' on the part is what keeps you in line, then that's what you have to do... forever. But that's...

A suggestable technique is to pull back from 130 bpm (your limit) 10 bpm to 120 bpm. Now a gradually progression through the tempos. Play single stroke roll right-foot leading and left-foot leading for 5 mins each. Double stroked sixteenths right-leading and left-leading, 5 mins each. Paradiddle 5 mins. Double Paradiddle, 5 mins. Triple Paradiddle, 5 mins. Paradiddle-diddle (right and left leading), 5 mins. That's half an hour of...

It's probably tuned to barely finger-tight. At least that's what I do when I want that kind of sound. After that only a slight amount of muffling is needed to finish it off.

To me German is having the palm basically pointing down and the wrist neutral, as if it was laying on a pillow or hanging loose at your side. This is the position that you make contact at - where your muscles and tendons are most relaxed. You've got a nice V thing happening with the sticks, but when you start to play, the stick usually aligns itself more closely with the arm. This is more common ...

I do the same thing. The problem is you are unconsciously relying on various cues in the songs for the different parts. While playing to the ipod you always hear the song perfectly and thus think that you have it down. Then when you play it live with it sounds completely different and those cues are lost and so are you. The only way I was able to become independent of these cues was to learn...

For my right hand, I find my stick lays in between the 1st and 2nd joint on my index finger and then across the second joint of my middle finger...for most playing. My left hand is traditional grip, in most cases, but when I switch to matched grip, it would be the same as my right. Developing a good ...

When I play Traditional grip, I tend to hold the stick loosely between my middle and ring finger and my thumb, keeping the thumb rested on my index finger. I find that I have better control this way.

DO you use German Grip or French Grip or Traditional. If it is German Grip, the stick shouldn't be touching the palm at the top of the stroke, this means you are holding the stick to close to your hand and scrunching up your fingers and then for this the wrist is hurting because the muscles that move the fingers are close together in the wrist. If using French Grip, your sticks ...

First, use less energy holding the stick tight, and focus instead on controlling its motion. Obviously you don't want the stick to drop out of your hand, but that doesn't mean it requires a death grip in order to keep it there! You'll probably find you have more stamina, less aching fingers, and can move the stick faster if you don't grip it so tightly. Speed will indeed come once you relax ...

Remember, getting fast on double bass takes time, a lot if time. Most people try to jump the gun and attempt fast rolls before they are ready. You have to push yourself speedwise but if that tempo is so high and beyond your current capability that you have no control, then it really accomplishes nothing. It seems like you are playing some good exercises though. Do you play them ...

haha! that's a pretty common problem, if that's what you're doing. if you're like i used to be (and still am a little bit) you'll start off at a reasonable tempo but as the song gets into the more exciting parts like the chorus, you'll speed up. the trick is to try to remain calm and relaxed throughout the song, no matter how crazy things get. and you need to really think about holding an ...
