I use a Shopsmith, and it has the Reeves type system for variable speeds, but the slowest speed is still way too fast for most of my turning, and pretty noisy. I have a 4:1 reduction unit that Shopsmith sells, to add to the power head. Well, this works after a fashion, but is still clunky way to...

Make certain that the blade width is small enough to achieve the desired radius of cut, that there is "set" to the blade teeth, and use a blade in the 3-5 TPI range. If the motor bogs, feed material slower. Before anyone asks, here is a brief generalization of blade width vs. minimum cut...

one thing you should look at, which is non-obvious, is the threads on the spindle - are they a diameter and pitch you can buy accessories for, or are they unusual and you will be contacting guys like me to make you special ones? I have the Axminster with O'Donnel jaws. Works great and when I use it for bowls it is the most accurate chuck for reverse chucking for hollowing I have ever used. We use one in our turning club and nearly all the demonstrators remark on its accuracy. Works just as well on small boxes and makes it easy to get at the back because of the long jaws. In my efforts at turnng bowls and somewhat deeper vessels, I find an occasional crack for one reason or another. I also create some surface defects from sometimes less-handy manipulation of my cutting tools. If the defects are not fatal to the piece and I think I want to salvage the piece, I have decided that a decorative accent may be the ticket. I have obtained some powdered brass, ...

Ernie Newman (Australia) and I are going to Samoa in February to set up a production turning capability at a school there to help in the recovery from the recent earthquake/tsunami. I would like to hear from turners with experience in that environment to give us a jump...
