I am working on a strategy for private sector recovery after a disaster. I'm looking for case studies on how cities helped businesses recover (i.e. permitting, communications, relocation, etc) after a disaster, such as an earthquake or flood. I've already got APA's 'Planning for Post-Disaster Recovery and Reconstruction' but I'm looking for something more oriented towards economic recovery. In addition, can anyone...

Work with the insurance industry for ideas. They can even help with getting the word out when you show them premiums will rise as merchants get a grip on true costs and the need for better coverage. The main issue in Greensburg is that storefronts rented for $3-400 a month before the storm. Rents in new construction is quite a bit more. What we have to work on is to show that with sustainable building, utility cost savings can cover most of...

Mike hit on a great problem for many businesses. They cannot afford to rent new construction. Does this mean that the city may have to help subsidize space? There are many other costs, too, that the business must bear to re-esyablish itself. You are right to focus on pre-disaster planning. In addition to APA, you should speak with the great folks over at the International Economic Development Council. I worked with them in Mississippi after...

I'm not familiar with private sector post-recovery planning, but the Florida Dept of Community Affairs is actively involved in this issue. Here's a link that might be of assistance. http://www.dca.state.fl.us/fdcp/DCP/PDRP/index.cfm

And look what just turned up at that "other" planning website: A “Button Park” in Your Future? http://citiwire.net/post/1496/ "When the Trust for Public Land (TPL), working with the Colorado Health Foundation, brought together groups concerned about the disconnect of children from nature, TPL leaders and I brainstormed on the future of land trusts in tough economic times. ...

The government has never had the power to seize private property for commercial use without establishing a public purpose nexus. New London, in the opinion of five justices of the Supreme Court, did exactly that: they established a public purpose nexus. If Ms. Kelo hadn't been about the money, and the money only, Pfizer wouldn't have lost years and gobs of money fighting her. They would ...

You didn't mention anything about Housing in your list of workers. If this position worked on some Housing items, like Section 8 or CDBG rehab you could use those admin funds to offset some costs. Good thinking with the grant-writing position; the more grants they secure the more your department has to spend (both admin and project costs).

Interesting question but I can't say what they invest in a community. Here it's been two years and all we have left of the still proposed 400million Cabela's project are abandoned houses .

I'm not the best at what retailers need, but the Macy's that is looking at my city is using a 10 mile radius and about 100k people. I have no idea on the average income. I don't know if the market as a whole makes a difference, but I'm in a suburb of Phoenix and there is another Macy's about 10 miles down the road. Also, all the Macy's are located in regional malls.

I would like to know more about the structure. And did the commune or kibbutz that you worked on ever fill up and have to turn people away? Did you ever have a shortage of anything such as not enough cars for people to run errands, that sort of thing?
