Stripped Oil Vent Screw - Metal...

Well, the previous owner had let some bad corrosion take place on the outside of the LU, but any lack of material you see in the hole is the result of my poor work of drilling out the broken screw extractor. The por15 paint I put on has been holding well, but it's scraped off around the hole now. There's still plenty of aluminum on the case, I think. It's just going to have to be a really big bolt to cover the messy and tapered...

Yeah, that makes sense. There was water in the fuel when I bought it, so mabee that has bunged up something in the govenor/pump thing.

If there is an obstruction in the fuel line prior to the lift pump....you can suck air in thru the gaskets on a racor or any of the hose clamped joints. Another, although rare occurrence, is that the pickup tube inside the tank has a crack or pinhole in it....when the fuel gets below that air gets in.....in a similar vein, some pickup tubes have a fine screen on the bottom which clogs and the resulting vacuum can cause air to get in anywhere...

I'm having a thought about the alternator. What size is it? internal or external regulator? size of battery bank you're charging? state of battery discharge?

That has a lot of erosion. That's not just stripped threads, that's a lack of material. I wouldn't be surprised if water hasn't already done some damage internally. In order to repair that you'll need to get to clean metal, which would require a larger hole. You're going to need to jury rig this one. If it were mine I'd drill it out for a keensert and seal it with Belzona, and create a new face to seal on....

Excessive Wear on SD40 Yanmar...

Meck , I would never take it personally and I'm sorry if my post is hard to understand . I really don't know how to make it any clearer. The original question regarded excessive wear on the cone clutch . The saildrive is usually left in gear while under sail. The yanmar manual advises against this to prevent slippage and wear . I'm not qualified to discuss the finer mechanical points but it's pretty obvious to me . This is...

Is there anything else you failed to mention? second engine dying and water in fuel of number one was not mentioned originally. I think the $170 for fuel filters will be minor by the time these engines are running correctly.

Engine Won't Idle Under...
Published (2009-12-04 15:22:00)
Hi Charlie Like your name. I had a problem like that and it turned out to be an air leak in the fuel line. If you have Caulder's book he has some tests to track down leaks. If you need those pages I can get you the info but can't do it right now. Send me a PM. Feel around all of the hose clamps for holes in the hoses. This is especially common with the hose clamps that have holes that run all the way thru the band.

The spline is probably rusted into the flywheel. You have two pieces of scrap.......it will cost you way too much in aggravation and busted knuckles to try to save them.....unless you want to restore them for antique boat sake

I am guessing the big cone shaped thing was a zinc. I would contact Dufour for exact specs on what is down there. Might even be in your owners manual. I would think you lost your nuts (no not those nuts) and the key as well. Are you sure the prop was a Volvo prop? is this a sail drive? If it is contact Volvo for info seriail should be on the engine plate next to engine serial. Good luck ...

My wife and I are presently cruising in Mexico. As we were pulling up to the fuel dock at San Jose del Cabo, the slip coupling on our 25-year old Volvo failed and the prop shaft tried very hard to leave the boat entirely. The remnants of the old shaft coupling kept it from doing so. Since the engine has long since been discontinued, no new replacement parts were available. Used parts were ...

I think you are sort of stuck having to haul. You might be able to get a driver to do it but it is really not the kind of thing to do like that. Cutlass bearing are rubber not copper. If you put a copper sheet in there it is likely to heat up and stick to the shaft causing more damage. Honestly this is a job that requires hauling. Best just bite the bullet and do it right or you will end up with ...

Here's some research from my files (though concerning sterndrives etc) . .written by Mark Rigg ? I believe. . . hope it helps. Determining which sacrificial anode will fully and safely protect a boat depends on a number of factors. As previously discussed, it is important to understand the physical properties of each anode material. In addition, boaters should also understand how each anode ...
