It is true, a cruising permit you do not need in ALL Med countries, however an insurance you will need everywhere, even in Italy and France. If you have not been asked at some places does not mean that you do not have to have one.

Fantastic go for it if you can...It last weeks though so take care and as Hugosalt stated the private tents are for businesses and Families, but a little research before will provide you with a myriad of public possibilities. A lovely city too. Regards Alan

There have been various discussions about crusing permits in different countries, and I can't at the moment recall which countries require them. Also it varies according to the size of your boat (eg the notorious Sardinian tax only covered boats over 14m),a dn it changes as the law changes. I have sailed (in the Med) in Spain, Morocco, France, and Italy; so far I have not required any cruising permit, nor been asked for insurance. In...

Advice on Spanish Ports Requested
Published (2009-12-15 22:36:00)
I don't know about Marinas or the Spanish Coast but my kids went to Portugal this past spring and visited the Algarve. Specifically Lagos. They loved it. It's on the south coast of Portugal. About 200 miles from Gibraltar. There's a great scenic hiking trail along the ocean. Miles and miles of cliffs and grottos. They hear it's a fishing town. Spectacular coastline, beautiful town- worth checking out.

Provision for Transat in Canaries. Las Palmas is biggest city and marina berthing is cheap. Big chandlers, markets and even Spanish version of Macys at El Corte Ingles with big below ground food store which has facility to cryovac meat at no extra charge. You can then hop over to smaller islands further west for more atmosphere before jumping off. Cannot really give recommendations on fishing ports down the Spanish east coast. Not many marinas...

Navigation on River Seine
Published (2009-12-16 01:35:00)
Passages up the river (from Honfleur or Le Havre) need to be planned to take advantage of the long period of flood tide to get to Rouen, rather than anticipating ploughing against an ebb tide. There are very few opportunities to moor on that journey, and none of those are at all comfortable, due to passing vessels. Another factor is the frequency of mists and fogs on the lower reaches. But, as has been said, many craft make the passage without...

Bareboat Charter with Paralos?
Published (2009-12-11 12:31:00)
Hi All, We are considering a bareboat charter with Paralos in the Ionian Islands. Has anyone chartered with them before? Any feedback on their operations? Unfortunately it has been my experience in the past that when we charter with anyone other than The Moorings, the experience has not been great. We've experienced everything from knot meters, depth gages, tank gages that don't work "on any of the boats", a...

Navigation on River Seine

Another information to know about the Seine river, specially at its mouth, is the tidal stream speed that can be very strong (up to 7 or 8 knots...) and difficult to manage for (sail)boats with small power engines. Actually, due to the lack of possible stopover until Rouen, you need to ensure having sufficent power from you engine to go against the tidal stream and not disturb the traffic. This has to be taken in account while planning such...

Advice on Spanish Ports Requested
Published (2009-12-15 21:06:00)
We are transiting from Palma de Mallorca to Gibraltar and on to the Caribbean in February. Given the weather we are looking at a mix of day trips & overnights, but are looking for advice as to the best stops along the Spanish coast. We are more interested in interesting cities and fishing villages than upscale mega marinas. Our boat draws 2.7m(9 ft). Any information on the best places to provision for the TransAtlantic would also be...

My kids were there this past April. They said it was a huge festival ( miles long). Women and little girls were dressed in flamanco dresses and the men dressed in suits or as Matadors. (Many people were dressed in casual clothing too). They were unable to go into any of the 'casaitas' (little private houses/tents) that lined the fairgrounds. They heard families purchase/rent these little houses ...

Corinthian Canal and Papers
If we are just passing through Greece (Innocent passage) do we need a Greek Cruising permit to pass through the Corinthian canal?
Are any papers required or you just pay and go? Are insurance papers needed?

We are sailing since 6 months in the Western Med. The prices do vary a lot in function of the marina, if it is a public or a private one. As example in Puerto Portals, close to Las Palmas they asked for our 41' boat some 200€ per day. (we anchored 50 m. from the marina for free!). On average you will pay some 80€ per day in the summer. Now we are in Palau, north of Sardinia, close to the Smeralda...

The problem was not limited to the boats w/o holding tanks... A group of us chartered a gulet for a week in the Bodrum area and they dumped their holding tanks overboard everytime we were underway.

Lots of good information
Might I suggest that you add a section of the qualifications and licences required to drive your own boat in the canals (not required if it is a hire craft - go figure)
