"Any discussion of the Dominican Republic is akin to talking about religion and politics - there are very heated opinions about the place..." Seems to me there's no heat here but rather lots of info being exchanged. Jack

We have cleared a non-US boat in both Puerto Del Ray Marina in Fajardo and Club Nautico in Puerto Rico...our US cruising certificate obtained in the US was accepted as valid. When we paid for a US cruising certificate in Florida it cost $100 US less than when we paid for one in Fajardo...same document!

Hey Chief, I've seen the forecast... the snow doesn't bode well. It's not going to stick, but I wouldn't risk slipping on it. Sunday looks much better. Sunny and in the 40's but winds in the 20's. I'll probably just experiment at the slip.

We are going back to Honolulu for a year then back to semi retirement in the PACNORwest. We love Victoria and desolation Sound. Mostly I like sitting in the middle of the Pacific high as far away from phones as a man can get. and then spend 6 weeks playing the stereo REALLY LOUD! I did the Honolulu to San Fran trip last year on a Bene 423. I decided I wanted something hardier under me next time. your in Jax? Where abouts?

Little Bahama Bank at Night? -...
Published (2009-12-09 19:18:00)
I've done a few night sails on the Little Banks both to Walker's via memory rock and Great Sale via the Indian Cay Passage, and saw no worries on either of those. However, I prefer to sleep at anchor at night to staying up when possible and have adopted the exact strategy S/V Antares mentions for most of my trips. If you are not comfortable with the Indian Cay Passage, you can still stop to anchor and clear at West End if you wish...

Ask around about the Quicksands. They're strong currants over shallow water.

Stop in St Augustine, then go to Fort Pierce Inlet. That may be far enough South and it is wwell appointed for work and play. The further South you get the more expensive it will become.

The "Christmas Winds" are basically reinforced tradewinds, and usually kick up in late December (hence the name), but could occur any time during the winter months. The trades normally blow from the easterly sector in the teens, but if the mid-Atlantic High gets well established, it will drive the winds up into the twenties or even low thirties (knots). It can be predicted a few days in ...

I use to make that run for 10 years and after about a dozen daylight crossings I started doing it at night ,the area where you enter the bank will be the shallowest after that it gets deeper as you go to as i remember about 18 feet- there are a few uncharted heads on the way and are deep enough to pass over,in the day light we would always make a stop and pull out the bugs- good luck and have fun...

Are you saying you've never helped sail a boat before? Then bring a friend, or friend of a friend, just someone who knows how to sail along. You can learn the basics, but it will be much easier with someone to get you through some of it. Realize that even motoring, this boat will probably handle differently than your typical power-boat.

I would steer clear of Key West but Marathon, Hawks Cay or the Greater Key Largo area might work for you. There are a lot of crap boats down here so you may want to look around Tampa for the boat and sail it down. Good luck. Dave

might try Conch Charters. We had good luck with them. They use older charterboats that are very well maintained. I think the Beneteau we had last time was 6 years old, ex-Moorings boat and everything worked perfectly and the boat was very clean and ready when we arrived. Finding a cat this late for January may be a challenge. Have a great trip!

We spent 6 weeks in the DR, anchored in Luperon. The DR is a beautiful country with kind people. It is definately not Miami! The "full-time" boaters & Ex Pats in Luperon are a good group of people, very helpful and displayed much kindness. We met some wonderful people..Getting around by bus is relatively easy. I would highly recommend a trip to Santo Domingo for a few days, the history is ...
