Make a scrap ghan, it can always be out lined in black. This way, you have a heirloom of yarn from his Grandparents.

Yes, I agree with you completely. I was born in 1951 some years past the depression/WWII generation but I still have some of their traits. Its hard for me to throw some things away but have gotten better about throwing things out as the years have gone by. There was a motto (don't remember the exact wording) that was used a lot during the depression. It's something like this, Make it do, Use it up, Wear it out or do without. I have...

Are you going smaller than an H, but not going smaller with your yarn? For example, Red Heart Super Saver or Caron Pouners are on the heavy & stiff side of worsted weight, Caron Simply Soft or Peaches n Cream cotton is what I think of as more average worsted. I might be able to go down to an F on the latter 2, but G is a little tight for the former.
I don't think you need long fingers

Sometimes if you take the yarn and the receipt back to the store, they will adjust the price for you. Otherwise you can return it, and buy it again for the sale price.....I may get some flak for this idea, but it's only happened to me once, and the manager wasn't very nice....guess he was having a bad day!

How about a gift certificate for a craft store in her area? And/or, if you want to do more, pick up some notions like a few stitch markers, knitting stitch gauge, a few sizes of crochet hooks (odd sizes like L, M, N) some yarn needles (for doing seams), needle point protectors (keeps your knitting on your needles when not knitting) etc and put them in a little crocheted stocking with the gift ...

Nope - you're not alone. I'm finally working on an aran ghan. (remember all that thinking about it?) well - I ripped about 12 rows before I finally got it just right.
Sometimes it's just better to put it away and take it back out tomorrow. hugs!

I'm barely sitting up here, but I wanted to post long enough to apologize for the holdup on the November shawl going out. DH and I are both down with the flu, so as much as it saddens me to type this, it's not, unless a miracle happens, going to go out before Thanksgiving. DH is worse off than I am, the doctor wanted him in the hospital so that he could receive ...

I usually use a tapestry needle which is large and weave and sew the ends in after I have done any crochet item. Tapestry need looks like a very large sewing needle with a large eye in it. I recommend that you weave ends in so that you feel better that the ends are secure. Just a thought.
