Good question - most of the time (90% or whatever) the distance will be lighter due to atmospheric perspective. The two exceptions I can think of are: 1: When there is a low storm in the distance but the local landscape is lit - that always makes for very dramatic lighting which looks really cool since we don't see it a lot (though we had it two days ago here). 2: A somewhat related phenomenon is that really low, flat light at dawn/dusk...

Art Subject Matter
Published (2009-12-06 09:39:00)
Art is a form of communication. You have to decide if you want that conversation to be with yourself or with others. If you want others to respond you have to develop the mechanics that allows for effective expression to them. Usually if the work has merit on some level and the form of expression fits the idea, people will respond to it, no matter what the subject matter is. Look at Joel Peter Witkin, Damien Hirst or Jenny Saville. Very highly...

Good ideas but bad development

You know Robin Hood right? I was about to made some kind of parody dressing him up in red, with a sickle and a hammer on the hat and with a money bag. It was "Robin Hood: the 12th century communist" Because of the stealing the rich and giving money to the poor people stuff, you know. Anyway, since I had the idea I've done like 10 sketches and all I got was a complete and absolute shit. Most of the time I notice I'm...

Found An Old Book
Published (2009-12-07 19:27:00)
I was cleaning out my basement and ran across a book called " Drawing and Painting from Imagination: Utilizing Non-Classical Techniques " by Don Stacy. I think my parents gave it to me when I was in college, but I never read it. From scanning the jacket blurb and looking at a few of the example exercises, it appeared to be more of that "just express yourself" BS you get in most art schools these days. So, to...

If anyone is still searching, even without the discounts....this is a great scanner. I did some test scans last night and this works great with a Mac. Honestly, I think it scans too well. It, actually, picked up a ghost image from the drawing on the opposite side of the paper. Kind of funny once I figured it out.

Dave just made a very good case. And yes that's the only way to learn what the teacher truly has to offer. I've never taken a painting class before, so I didn't take that into consideration.

For me, as a " white" person, there is actually much more variety in my own race. I don't like over-simplification. You stated it doesn't matter where the black girls are coming from, jamaica, afrika (!), Australia, whatever. Tbh I can't differentiate either, dude's coming from england? From Ghana? How am I to know? I don't have enough expertise to call facial differences between a Kongolesian and...

I'm sure it's not impossible. It just shows it's a lot less hassle to use
reference to get convincing results.

How about you start with some sleep? It does wonders for some people.
Start small, work up to big things. Do figure studies, small still lifes in conte. Go on to colour studies. Lots of figure studies. Go to class. Rinse and repeat.

You can copy anything, where you get into trouble is
1 selling it or using it for commercial purposes without permission
2 passing it off as your own

You can do eet!! I started when I was 24 (to make some pictures of my MMO character while waiting for a new patch to come out). At first it was just now and then, but slowly got more serious about it (was still in school for accounting, so wasn't really "practical" to do art).
I been drawing for 2 years now and just moved out to take classes at gnomon. I don't think it's too late. Sure I am...

Well during life drawing, our art teacher sometimes touches up certain points on the other students to show them where they might be really off on something.
I don't see that as being wrong myself, although since they are expecting that they might put that stuff in their portfolios, it might be.
If it's just practice, and they're doing it to show students something, then i think it's fine, ...

I was just asking myself the same questions yesterday, and am curious to see the responses!
People keep telling me that I need to be more specific and I see that it really does make it easier to move forward. But I also know that (in my case at least) wanting to do something and actaully doing it in a job situation don't always match up. I did an internship at a company that was all about ...

Well, pretty much everything manufactured begins with concept art - a cell phone, camera, a bridge, the car or bus you go to school in, the school building, the school desks, the pencil sharpener, coffe maker, the backpacks, etc. So you shouldn't have much trouble pointing to something that used conceptual art!
Comics aren't really considered concept art - they fall under a term called "...
