Acer Travelmate problem.
Published (2009-12-01 22:19:00)
I can't answer for Bucks, he's more experienced in pc repair than I am, but it does sound like more than the video. The fact that the keys are not working seems to point to problem that affects more than the video. But I think most people would suggest replacing the motherboard rather than trying to fix one that's faulty. Not many shops even have the equipment to repair boards anymore because replacement is more cost efficient....

Sounds like the graphics chip went belly up. Depending on what it's using, it might be replaceable or you may need to replace the entire motherboard.

I'm embarrassed to say that the fix was actually quite simple. It turns out that the intel onboard chipset had not been updated and this was causing the problems. I went to the intel site and had it search for a new driver and installed it. The Samsung (new monitor) driver is installed as well , although that may not be necessary as you indicated previously. I apologize if I wasted your time and truly appreciate your help. I plan to visit...

If you only have 1.2 GB of RAM I would seriously consider doubling that--it's pretty cheap and will make life on the PC more enjoyable. Visit crucial.com and see how much it would be to go to 3GB.

I can't see the boot screen either. Nothing from the time you turn it on. I just know that the login screen comes up first for me to put in my password. Thats how I know it is booting up.

The first thing I would do is eliminate temperature. Make sure all your fans work, and it wouldn't hurt to dust everything out. Also, you might want to think about adding another layer of thermal paste. This is inexpensive, and is very beneficial on many levels. Once you have ruled out temperature, let us know and we go from there.

Boot the computer and immediately begin to tap the F8 key. You should get a screen where you can select "Last known good configuration"

It sounds like your provider (Sprint) requires PPOE, and your router is configured correctly. You can check this by looking in the Setup Tab of your router. If PPOE is used, you can configure your computer to authenticate instead of your router.

Have you tried tapping the F8 key when starting to get to safe mode with networking. If you can get there here is the acer support page for all the driver Unexpected Error .

I'm assuming the screen goes black only when Windows loads, right? Have you tried choosing Last Known Good Configuration? It's unusual for a screen to work until Windows loads and then go completely black. If you have a video card and onboard video I would suggest removing the card and changing to the onboard. If you only have one let us know what it is. Also tell us if you have installed ...

Uninstall Internet Explorer 8 and install Internet Explorer 7 if you are loyal to IE. You may want to consider Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Opera. The only two I really deal with personally is IE and Mozilla Firefox.

Try tapping F8 at startup and use Last Known Good Configuration to boot up the computer and see what happens. I've read that there is a current update which has been known to cause some issues. If you can, go to Add/Remove programs and see if you can remove the most recent updates. Then install one at a time to find the culprit.

Go to this site, , download the Bitdefender Rescue CD iso file, burn a cd and boot your computer with it. Make sure you have a wired connection to the internet for it to update and let it run.
This will remove the viruses but it will not repair any damage done to Windows.

Shut downs are normally heat or power-related. Can you turn the computer right back on afterward or does it have to sit a while?

Nah, it's probably a screensaver. There is one that will do just that. If you walk away from the computer, it does this so, for instance, a co-worker doesn't see what you're working on.
Try right-clicking the Desktop, then select properties, then screensaver and look for a checkbox that says "On resume, password protect." If it's checked, uncheck it.

I would tear this thing down and give it a serious cleaning. Once that's done, start looking for anything that might be damaged. Specifically leaking or bulging capacitors. Exposed wires could also be possible.
The link above will take you to the service manual for your laptop.

A cpu rarely goes bad, and when it does nothing works. But pictures aren't usually much of a problem either. What program are you using to view pictures with? If you are having problems with hanging up there's probably a lot of stuff running in the background eating up your memory or cpu. Right click on the clock area and open Task Manager, then click the Processes tab. Next click on the Mem ...
