I think that's the Recovery Console you're picturing ttweakk. As far as I can remember repairing the OS just requires the correct cd and going past the recovery option then pressing "R". From what I understand the OS is just written over the old one, without messing up the files. So0ky, just to make sure it's not the problem, you need a retail cd. For reasons only MS can explain OEM disks won't work.

Holy.... Thank you Bama. I've been wondering why that doesn't work. So that explains it. If a retail CD is used, the repair option is available. If an OEM disk is used, it is NOT available. Makes me feel better. =)

Hard drive failure blog post

Hi, I recently made a post on my blog about Hard drive failure due to smoke particles. I would like to share it on these boards. I understand that some people will view this as spam, but I feel it is relevant information and I would like to become a contributing member to these forums as I feel I have a lot to contribute. If there is anything wrong with posting my blog posts here to provide information along with help people with problems let...

Honestly it is a little advanced for the average person I think. People are too used to having a GUI and a command line scares alot of people. If they could make it all pretty and easy to use with a GUI I'm guessing more people would be willing to try it. Thats my opinion.

Good point Bama. The primary reason, I think, is most people have Dells, HPs or other major brand name PC and they do not have Windows disks. Hell, most people haven't even made their recovery disks.

What are the specs for your system? Have you run any antivirus or antispyware programs recently? Some of what you are doing can be cpu intensive depending on your specs.

I know your intentions were good, but next time before you wipe your drive take a look at the event viewer, which I assume is still present in Windows 7. It would be really stupid if Windows stopped logging itself. How to get there in Windows 7 is beyond me, because I have to wait till christmas to get the OS. Or, if you do decide to wipe the drive, save the log files. The log files ...

I agree that modern Operating Systems do not need to be defragged--by modern I mean Vista and 7. XP was a wreck with data. You do bring up good points with recovering data. Hopefully, people will have backups and will never have to resort to third-party recovery solutions for data. But as you said, the more the hdd is overwritten, the less likely you are to recover files. And the more your ...

Thanks for the heads up. I was not too sure how well Clamwin worked, but if you recommend it I'll take your word. Although I am wondering why you didn't use the regular addy. People post links here all the time, especially if it's a free download. And if it's a free download that's really useful then links are expected. As long as it's useful for pc repair that is.
