I hook the infected computers to my home network to receive data updates and use some on-line scanners. If so will updated real time protection be enough to...

Maybe update the driver for the wifi, change the channel in the router and wifi adapter to see if you get a stronger signal. Are you close to the router? What is your signal strength?

More than likely the workgroup names are not the same. I had to deal with a networking issue just like this today and the problem is that with many earlier XP machines the default workgroup name was set to WORKGROUP but later XP service packs and Vista use the workgroup name MSHOME. Both PCs have to have matching workgroup names. Do this on the XP machine, go to start>control panel>system, ...

Make sure the laptop's wireless is not accidentally shut off. It's easy to do by accident? Is the router using encryption? If so, you might need a password. Also, try going to Start>Run and type cmd and hit ok. At the prompt, type ipconfig /renew and hit Enter. If you do not get an ip address, reboot the router and mode and repeat the process.

Try your friend's computer with a different phone jack. Personally, I believe either the wall jack is defective or the modem in his pc is.

What speeds are you running your network at? Are you running 10, 100, or 1000 Mb/s (ethernet, fast ethernet, or gigabit ethernet)? Is the switch part of your router and the network cards in both laptops gigabit capable? Also do you know if your cabling is Cat5 or Cat5e. Is the 30m Cat5 cable one you have constructed yourself or a store brought one?
