The best way to recover files and foldes is not to delete them ;-) You can use R-Studio, Recuva, they are good utilities for recovering deleted files. But, most of all I prefer Advanced File Recovery . It recovered almost everything valuable on my deleted, formatted and partially overwritten HD. And its quite easy to use.

Have you checked your firewall settings ? If settings are not right, firewalls will block other computers from connecting.

Can the computer connect to Microsoft's website to update the server? Check IE settings, make sure you have latest ActiveX updates installed etc.

Have you tried disabling your firewall? If it works, then you'll need to allow an exception for whatever is blocking it. Also, can you browse when connected to another network?
