Well, i don't think she said she was focused on just "one career," she just said that she wants to double major in journalism and poli-sci. It's not all that uncommon to stake out a major (or what you think you'll major in) when you're at the very beginning of the college process because you don't really have a good idea of what colleges offer and what you're looking for, so you kind of go with a...

Chance an aspiring transfer?

I think you could be a very strong transfer candidate. Your grades, tests, high school ECs all look excellent. I would take the opportunity, if you can, to get to know your current professors better, especially by going to their office hours, so they can give you recommendations with some depth. I know you just got started in college, but you don't mention much for college ECs, so I would also see if you can beef them up a bit to show...

hahaha @ walking smith propaganda You've got a good attitude pick up sticks. As someone who is applying to smith for a second time as a transfer student (waitlisted in high school), I would definitely advise not becoming too attached to any school. If you think you could be annoying your friends talking everyones ears off about Smith now, wait to see what people think of you after you've been doing it for two years like me x)...

Current Government major here, the equivilent of Poli Sci at other institutions, let me know if you have any questions While no, we don't have journalism as a major, I will say if you're interested in engaging with law & policy through media either as a writer, commentator, reporter, analyst, etc. it's a great program to do so. The breath & depth is excellent in my experience. You might find some classes are more...

KS, you might find yourself working on the media relations side of things in a political office. My D worked in the press operations side of things when she interned for a Senator in DC and it was regarded as one of the best intern assignments in the office. She learned a lot and was fortunate enough to eventually be given some small writing assignments. She's now working for a politically connected non-profit in DC and her writing...

Quote: The really excruciating wait is after/if you get in ED, and then you realize you still have months and months to go before you can start. My D had enough trouble waiting after RD. After a week after she decided to attend Smith, she blurted out, "I just want to be there -- NOW."

For prospective students coming to this thread from last summer my D ended up in the Quad and is very happy there. Her house is very social and has a lot of first years an seems to be very friendly and has a lot of community (sometimes more than we would like ) She has met people from other parts of campus mainly through classes but does primarily spend time with her house friends so far. The quad has a lot of althletes of which she is not one...

Thanks to everyone for all the great information! This has helped so much and given me a much better idea of what to look for. MeredithBelle, I think it's a really good point not to limit myself to one career. I used to be totally certain I wanted to become a journalist but lately I have been pursuing my political interests more and have started to consider careers like becoming a political aide (perhaps after a career in journalism?), so...

The waiting is excruciating. Which is why Wellesley will always have a small warm part in my heart for it's early "tip" letter. But in return, verily I say unto you, much of what seems of monumental importance now will have vanished far into the rear view mirror in not more than nine months. No...I didn't accept the notion and relax either.

I should add that her two-credit course is also taught by either a grad student or an adjunct -- something I don't really care about given the course. Still, this semester, her senior fall, she is being taught by only two full-time Smith professors out of five instructors.

I'm sure it has been done before. On your "Why Smith?" essay, make sure your reasons are both compelling and concrete since the adcom will expect you to have a greater knowledge of Smith than other transfer applicants do. For instance, why do you expect to be more academically challenged at Smith? What resources does Smith have that Mount Holyoke doesn't?

Not a current student but the notion that the social life is restricted due to the House system is, to use the technical term, nutso. Students are usually members of several communities at once, of which the House is only one. Classes, athletics, recreational or service organizations, performing arts groups, religious groups...sheesh. You can avoid it all if you choose to stay buried in ...

As far as I know there is no journalism major offered at Smith. I wouldn't write the school off entirely however because if you're attempting to double major (a very difficult scheduling feat) you will have a much easier time doing so at Smith than you would at almost any other college in the country. That's because Smith has no core curriculum requirements aside from a college writing course. ...

Hey MiChiamanoMimi, I would give admissions a call, since it looks like they allow for phone interviews for Ada Comstock applicants who can't make it to campus to interview. They would be able to give you more info about how to set that up.

Well, your CR SAT score is pretty low, but your SAT 2 in history should balance that out. Plus, you obviously have good grades in some of your non-math/science classes and that will matter way more than your test scores anyway. Plus, it's clear that you have high math/science aptitude, so that is a big plus. Other than that, your profile looks pretty much what schools like Smith look for in...

Mayfields, I wish I would wave a magic wand and tell you that you're in, but I can't because I'm not on the Admission Committee. Your information is very, very brief so it's hard to say. The fact that you already had a year of college and did very well looks good; if the caliber of the four-year women's college is comparable to Smith, that's even better. If you have written very powerfully ...
