Vandalism at Ithaca's music...

From the parent's forum Music School Vandalism at Ithaca College My heart goes out to the students, just before recitals and juries. Foolish, senseless and criminal. Maybe it's a random act of destruction, but my gut tells me this might have premeditated, and the pianos/music school was a specific target. Just my reaction due to the wife watching too many "Forensic Files". Let's hope they catch the perps...

There was a great thread last year that was used to document when families were hearing back from their prescreen submissions. I keep referring back to it so I thought I would start one for this year. My D has heard back positively from CCM, where she applied for the 1/23 vocal audition date. We got that email a few days ago. Also I believe Oberlin EA auditioners should hear results today or tomorrow.

The online section of their web site has the following notice in large letters at the top: "Welcome to Joseph Patelson Music House We are temporarily unable to fill orders until further notice." I do not know when or if they plan to get back into the online business.

I still would not ever deviate from what is posted on a site, with regard to what one is supposed to sing at an audition without written permission from the Chair of the department. It's one day, one chance, so why risk it? Another reason to "sing what you sent" is supported by what musmom2 just posted- you may not get time with the acccompanist before (that's also the way it was at Hartt), and they have already...

Osmuns is terrific. My son did business with them when he lived in Boston. As with Binx...he ordered most "stuff" online. Even when dealing with Chuck Levins...he never was in their store. He tried the instrument (on loan from someone) and then ordered it from Chuck Levin's. We also mail order music. We use a place called Eble Music and have for at least 10 years. Since I don't want to appear to be advertising...

I am sorry more of the music schools don't do that as well. The Juilliard Orchestra does all these incredible performances and few of them are available, same for the other music schools. Occassionally Curtis posts performances to Instant Encore website, but that is relatively rare. Maybe with all the good handheld recording devices out there we can start a guerrila internet posting...

I only got to go to a limited amount of D's operas and recitals as an undergrad since she was a 5 hour drive away. Now her grad school is much closer and I go to EVERYTHING. yay! I went to her first professional solo in the Messiah last week.($$ yipeee!) A woman sitting next to me who was involved in the booking process was going on and on how they had snagged a "spectacular" young artist and had that I was in for a...

First time we missed a premier of one of our son's compositions. It's sad. There will be a recording, but it's just not the same. Even missing hearing the beginning stages of the piece as it's composed, then the bits and pieces of rehearsals - we knew this was going to have to happen - but I do feel a void. On the other hand, we're going almost every week, or even more often, now to new music concerts to fill the gap!

DD is over 1000 miles away and it is a plane fare and hotel and car rental. So we only get to a few performances a year. We pick ones where she is a featured or solo artist, although her first year we did get to the Christmas concert with Chorale and Orchestra. What a treat that was. I'd love to get to more of them but time and funds limit that. Now she sends me recordings of the chorale and opera chorus ones.

Sounds like "What Not To Wear" for auditions. What fun! How I wish we'd taken pictures of the improperly dressed young "ladies" at some of the competitions we've been to--cleavage down to there, dress up to here, no stockings, 6 inch heels....Maybe you could enlist some of your D's friends to be live examples, of both properly dressed ladies and otherwise. You could do a "before" and "after." ...

Finnie - if you've already been minoring in music at NYU/CAS, have you asked your profs for feedback? It seems like faculty in the metro area often teach at multiple schools, or at the very least, know the faculty at nearby schools. Since they know your skill level, they may be the best people to ask at this point.

Diminished triads and particularly augmented triads are not very melodic in nature when played a note at a time, hence there are not going to be a lot of well-known songs that use them in that way. More often, these triads are used as short, chordal transitions between more stable sounding sections. It would be best if you could learn to identify them from the sound of the chord as a whole ...

MSM just posted on their auditions info page that they will be notifying students via email by this Friday, Dec. 18th. There is also a preliminary schedule posted (as of today) by instrument.
MODS: this should probably go in this years "Prescreens" thread.

On the Suny purchase website it lists the following for audition criteria:
One Italian art song.
One German or French art song.
One song in English (not a translation)
Some schools are very particular about no arias.

Thanks for posting. Really interesting. It doesn't surprise me, unfortunately. Except for the favored few, it's not what many dream about.

It crushed me to miss my son's 2 concerts at college (this being his freshman year) as we have attended every concert since he was in kindergarten - - he's now 900 miles away. I'm definitely making plans for the April concert!

I absolutely love chopsaver... my friend is bringing me back quite a few tubes of them from All-State.
I'm nagging my parents for a keyboard. My current one only has 60-something keys, so it lacks... a lot. Plus it doesn't have hammerkeys, and I oh-so love the feeling of hammer keys.

There is a store called NY Woodwind and Brass Music in midtown, I've never been but you can call and ask what their stock is like. If you can find a way to Woodbridge NJ you can visit Dillon Music, basically a toys r us for brass players. You can easily play 20 french horns from conns to hoyers, alexanders, etc. We found a Finke on the wall one day. They will also probably stock virtually every ...

Free is good.
And it depends how you define "free". It can mean accepted applicants do not pay a program tuition fee, the program covers all costs, including room and board, private lessons, and masterclasses. Some require minimal flat fees for all, ($100-200) or a returnable security deposit. Some will charge for lessons or master classes.
Many of these listed are worth thousands ...
