Question: Seperates vs. Reciever
Published (2009-12-04 14:52:00)
I too prefer separates. I had a good rig set up with the Adcoms, an Outlaw 950 and an the Outlaw ICBM. When I made the jump to HD-DVD / Blu-ray I needed an HDMI pre/pro, being that those were more then I could justify I went with the Onkyo 805. I played around with it for sometime but never really set-it up, dialed it in without the Adcoms and took the time with it. Doing so now, the quality exceeded my expectations, and for my small theater...

Very nice install and choice of gear. Personally with hi end gear like that I would have a better room for it all. Seems like a allot of clutter with the china and what not. Nice though.

Me and my sister both have 50 inch panny plasmas. We didn't get near the deal you did since we bought ours almost 2 years ago. I'm sure you will be extremely happy with the picture you get. It's hard to beat a panasonic plasma for picture quality, especially if it's in a dark room.

Well, not to much of a Vet. here. But I have had some exp. I have borrowed a few Vintage receiver just too "see" what it would do with the SDAs. The best I heard was an older Marantz, The Pio,Kenwood, and sony all sounded worse than MY current AVR The harmon Kardon was between My Denon AVR and the Marantz. None of them could touch the ADCOM separates I had.

Some will say that bridging amps does not bode so well. They say that the base responce is sloppy and that it just does not sound as good. IMO the best thing to do is to try it and see if you like the sound. If it does not sound good to you and you want more power to your L/R speakers I would suggest an external amp.

You could use an iPOD Classic ( with Apple Lossless files) Wadia transport combo. The Wadia extracts the digital data from the iPod which you would then connect to an outboard DAC. http://www.musicdirect.com/product/82178

Sounds like a ground loop issue. Throw a cheater plug (3 prong to two prong adapter) on the amp & see it that takes care of it. If it does, that's just a temporary fix until you can track down the problem. These things can be a real bitch to track down. I'm sure others will chime in on how to troubleshoot the problem for you. I'm not all that technical.

The Good Very solid machine. Even better remote. Build quality is better than gear costing much more. It reads everything I loaded into it. The Bad. SQ is too bright on my system and forward. You would not want to use this on a bright system. Something laid back would be happy with this CDP. The Ugly I dislike slot loaders. Give me a tray any day.

You should be looking an ATI/AMD 5000 series card. The 5870 (I think) is relatively well-prices, does up to 3 monitors (not all through hdmi though). The ATI cards also have an audio chip built into the card, so it can do 7.1 and 1080p through the hdmi cable.

James, My opinion is the Parasound is a much better quality built and sounding component. Plu Parasound is still in business and can provide parts and repair service for your unit (great service dept). The Soundcraftsman sounds pretty good, but is not well supported if you run into issues.

Changes like this can very subtle, but real. You'll need a week or two of listening thru as many of your Discs as possible to begin to hear the differences. Same can be true of most DAC's. Connect up ONLY the 3910, and listen for a couple weeks---any changes will be more apparent then. During this listening period, don't make any other changes. After the 2 weeks, remove the 3910 and ...

I'm guessing HDMI to DVI is probably the problem...maybe it's affected by the HDCP...i DON'T think early DVIs have that but all later HDMI MUST have compatible ins/outs for them to work? High bandwidth Digital Content Protection What is DVI? DVI was created by the Digital Display Working Group, and stands for Digital Visual Interface. It is an older digital interface that has all ...
