6n 16v vagcom codes
Published (2009-12-18 10:55:00)
clear all the codes and see what comes back. the immobiliser one is likely the issue tho! read the imobiliser itself, that'll tell you if its a signal failure or if key coding bin lost. the immob on this car may be in the dash clocks, so might have to read those rather than immob.

then that'll be the problem, i suppose getting a new cap would be cheaper option to test if that solves it first.

Thanks guys, but panic over. Had another look today and guess what...the GSF matrix hose (P/N 18004B) that I installed about a month ago has at least two tears in, one spraying directly onto the expansion tank! I'm going to go mental at them on Monday morning! So, avoid all GSF water hoses!

Superb stuff there!
Thanks for posting.
Did you do any testing of the fully modified airbox with a standard vs K&N panel filter?
I found a slight, but repeatable, gain there.
Overall though, I found the same...modified airbox works the best overall.
Interestingly, the modified airbox you tested is the opposite to mine - I have the port in the lower section and the upper just...

Starter Motor not engaging
Having a few issues with my starter motor on my '91 KR.
Now, I've heard about common case where the solenoid needs a whack, but I understand that this can be diagnosed by a loud clicking noise on trying to turn it over.
My problem is different. It sounds as if the starter motor is turning as normal, but ...

Well the time has come for the 2.1L 16V Build.
Took the MK1 Out today to get some miles on it since changing the big ends after the last set of GSF ones failed. Done 250miles on these ones so give a give today but they failed on 2 & 3 same as before.
Conclusion is the GSF ones that failed have damaged the crank slightly, ran fine with the new ones until i took it up to 6k and knocking ...

Is the car a Mk2 Golf?
Did you squeeze the hoses while it was warming up, to avoid any airlocks? If the top hose was still cold, it sounds like there's not much water in there.
It also helps if the car is on level ground - if the header tank isn't the highest part of the system, it'll cause problems.

If you had the starter motor you could connect it to the engine while off the car and crank it for a compression test but as the engine will be cold the rings wont be sealed properly and i guess it would only be useful as a comparison between bores.
Things i checked when assembling the engine are all the usuals, piston to wall clearance, crankshaft end float, head and block face for flatness etc...
