I've said it before, but this is NOT AN ISSUE at all.
I experienced this firsthand: a Dodge diesel idling about 50 paces away, and a prius driving in the lot about 100 paces away. The Prius' tires were louder than the dodge, which is the loudest of the Big 3 diesel trucks.

Apparently it works but taking a house full of seawater and filling it with batteries.
A particularly cool use of this would be to store cleanly-generated electrical energy in sea water and then use it to power a desalination plant.

Meh... the NC news was very "the sky is falling!" about this last night. "This will EFFECT YOU TOO!!!!!! OH NOES!". As to being a constraint on innovation... would this not spark innovation? My thinking: the engineers now have 2-3 years to figure out some way to lower power requirements fro their sets. They must really have a heavy foot. The " Prius now gets 32 miles per gallon in the city". I am sure it is much better than that.
After all I get around 50 mpg in the city in my Honda.

I find this is wonderful if belated progress in an area that's sorely needed. I'm old enough to remember when "one for the road" had positive connotations instead of the negative connotations that it so deservedly has now.
