Good Free Anti-Virus Software?
Published (2009-12-09 15:52:00)
AVG and Avast were already recommended. I also recommend MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. But since it doesn't have the auto-scan in the free version, I recommend it as a secondary antivirus, don't do it as often as your primary one. EDIT: Also don't run both at the same time. My mom used to do this on her computer and it kept freezing up, plus it's generally disrecommended. I don't remember if you're supposed to close...

Yay, thats like exactly what I said! But yes, most other OS's will work just fine for years without slowing down. Our home NAS which hasnt had the OS reinstalled in 7 years runs just fine. Its been shut down a few times to upgrade the hard drives, but even with constant use almost daily, its still as chipper as on day 1. The reason? It run FBSD, instead of Windows.

Instantbird just came out with another release. It's a multi-protocol IM client, comparable to Pidgin, and it is affiliated with Mozilla.

Go to the link provided then, and learn how to use google. I'm always looking at sites that suggest tips and tricks for whatever, because I can always learn. If the search doesn't work the first time, keep going until you find the combination that works. And as far as my own Google-Fu, it gets better constantly. I certainly wasn't born knowing how to use google....I learned just like you can.

A new monitor advice
Published (2009-12-09 01:31:00)
I've never had a problem with viewing angles, my monitor is always facing me. Although due to my desk I did prop it forward slightly by keeping my dusting rag under it. TN panels are certainly very decent now.

I use a Dell XPS 1530 which used to be on the expensive side (I got mine for $1500 but could have spent way more), but I think has come down in price. My friend uses the XPS 1330 which was about the same price as mine, and both of our ~2 yr. old laptops run the game tip top. I had another friend who installed and ran the game on a 6yr. old Dell Inspiron 5100, but he had a tough time getting ...

Seasonic and Corsair are my top two picks for Power Supplies. Im guessing you'd be fine with a 450W unit from either of those. If you can hold off a month, the next gen of GPU's should begin coming out and the prices on current stock oughta drop. If you do decide to go for something now, I suggest either the 9800GT like you said, or a HD4770 if you can find one at a comparable price ( I dont ...

Well the first question is what do you expect to do on it. If you're a graphical artist, you will probably want more accurate colors and better viewing angles. If all you do is games and surf the web, a simple TN monitor will work best for you ( they're the cheapest) With that being said, you wil want to look into Asus vw series. They're pretty cheap and are good quality monitors. Some ...

I run CivIV under Ubuntu 8.04 with no problems at all. I haven't tried the others listed, but I know Padma has instructions for CivIII in Technical Support. I've had to do quite a bit of tweaking for certain games, some work straight out of the box, but I'm very impressed with Wine. If a game is rated higher bronze or higher on winehq, it will most likely work on any modern Linux distro, but ...
