Laid-off but then asked to work?...

How do you know you are on the schedule? Did they call you and say you were rehired? Or did a former coworker give you a heads' up? Were you officially laid off or were you furloughed and now called back? Or were your hours reduced to zero and are now increasing? If they didn't officially rehire you, then you aren't turning down work by not showing up for those shifts. But if they didn't really lay you off, merely cut your...

Yeah, in NY you either have to work 4 or more days in a week or make more than the maximum weekly benefit of $405 to lose benefits that week, otherwise you get partial benefits that week (you do get your benefits back on weeks you don't actually work and the days you do work do push off when your benefits end by that amount of time too).

There is no way to fix it. Management are saying they hate the employee when they do that over and over again.

I once got a job (the best one in my whole life) at age 20 at a PBS station because I was too blue collar and too young to know enough to spout some B.S. The woman told me I'd be bored at the job because I was too smart for it, and I said, "Gotta eat." I think she was charmed by my barbarism. I mean, most people go in there with multiple degrees and pour on the meaning of life at PBS. She sent me on to take an English...

I think I know how you feel. If I thought I could make a decent living simply doing a decent job and working hard for eight hours a day, I wouldn't go back to my career. My grandparents didn't have careers. They had college degrees that were completely unrelated. They had jobs. They worked hard. They were dedicated and consciensious workers. But they didn't give their heart and soul ...

Not at all. Some sales people are slimey, but overall every item that you buy is sold to the retailer by someone, and they aren't all "slimey."

I don't think I'm 'coping okay'. I cry a lot. I am depressed most of the time. There are days I do nothing but sit at home going from one job site to another hoping a job will pop up that I can apply for. You just can't tell that from the posts I write. Getting out of the house helps. I remind myself that I didn't do anything to deserve this situation and I'm doing everything I can to ...

Worst job - bike messenger - they don't care if you have a college degree. You just gotta deliver stuff in complete days of rain or cold weather. Pizza Delivery or car messenger might work for you too! Did you just graduate with a finance degree? Why not work as a bank teller to start you in a bank and then move up?

We lose around $80 for a full-time $11/hr job. It's actually more than that if you count insurance, stock, etc.

Well let's see..... I was a nurse aid in a nursing home. A professional butt wiper for the princely sum of $1.65 per hour. I also worked at a self serve gas station for $2 per hour. I've worked in fast food too. Yes, I've had some crappy jobs. Some less than legal minimum wage because I was working in a college town where the employers could get away with it! I just started a ...

$150k with two children and a mortgage in NYC, DC, SF, or LA is middle class. $150k with two children in Cheyenne Wyoming or Shreveport Louisiana is upper class. Geography determines a lot. But there is also more to the term than just income. Education and occupation have a lot to do with it too. A non-profit organizer with a master' degree would probably, and I think legitimately, call ...

Yes, we are about the same age and I have been unemployed 4 months now. There are few administrative jobs in my area and the recruiters don't have many opportunities available either. I've considered an A+ certification for computers because I have the skills just no certs to back it up; only problem is that many times A+ isn't enough to meet the qualifications for a job listing. I don't want...

I used to post my resume but I never got any hits. I posted my full resume, minus proper names. It seemed to me a lot to expect that an employer would make the effort to sort through reams of resumes on craigslist, and contact you. Posting only a paragraph instead of your entire resume requires even more work on an employer's part. I stopped posting my resume to focus on other means of...

Two weeks is the minimum delay everywhere I've worked. They usually cut reimbursement checks along with paychecks and distribute them on payday. But there is a two- or three-day cut-off period before payday. That is, if we were paid on Friday every two weeks, and this month those dates were Nov. 6th and Nov. 20th, we had to have our expense reports in the accountants' hands by Nov. 4th and...
