Not to beat a dead horse but New Town does have a Trader Joes Market for groceries. There was a Wal Mart Market planned but it is currently on hold. Some of the Town Homes have small back yards, the detached homes all will have larger back yards. Maybe it is a little " Fake but with 38 sales and contracts in the past 12 months it is one of the most popular areas around.

I've never really thought of C-ville in west to east terms before, I guess because it's not a big city. If I had to say, the western side of the city(in city limits) is dominated by UVA housing for students and professors. Locals of course are scattered in there too. I've grown up in VA and am 29. If someone other than an old timer or shop manager used sir with me, especially someone my age or younger I would think they are weird. Very sad. I don't know what the stats were when I grew up there, but I don't recall that much violence.
Of course, as compared to Pittsburgh, where I live now, that is just a few months worth of crimes. We sometimes have several shootings in a week. Depends on gang activity. We also seem to have a lot of cops die in shootings here for some reason.

1. Is it a lousy commute from there to the Norfolk area? YES. I wouldn't consider it for an everyday commute. It could take 50 minutes to over an hour.

Are you looking for something rural or something more suburban? If you want to be in Virginia but near Maryland, both options are possible, but you'll get more responses posting in the Northern Virginia forum.
In the winter, at least, I'd say high temps in Northern Virginia average 40-45 degrees, with lows around 20-25, depending on how close you are to DC. It's not unusual to go a week ...
