Stay out of the Shenandoah Valley. Loaded with religious right wingers and other kooks. If you're moderate to liberal stay East of the Blue Ridge.

Not to beat a dead horse but New Town does have a Trader Joes Market for groceries. There was a Wal Mart Market planned but it is currently on hold. Some of the Town Homes have small back yards, the detached homes all will have larger back yards. Maybe it is a little " Fake but with 38 sales and contracts in the past 12 months it is one of the most popular areas around.

"Actually, come to think of it, I wouldn't be opposed to being in a DC suburb". Are you aware that housing prices in the DC suburbs are astronomically high? And that the DC area overall has the second worst traffic in the USA (according to official AAA rankings, for the last several years). Traffic seems to be the #1 political issue in the No.Va. suburbs. Loudoun County (Leesburg) recently ...

I have a 17 year old son that I need in a group home in Virginia ASAP due to a situation in the group home he is currently in in Indiana. I've never really thought of C-ville in west to east terms before, I guess because it's not a big city. If I had to say, the western side of the city(in city limits) is dominated by UVA housing for students and professors. Locals of course are scattered in there too. I lived off of Fontaine Ave. for a couple of years and that was the feeling I got. The eastern side is kind of a seperate city ...

I've grown up in VA and am 29. If someone other than an old timer or shop manager used sir with me, especially someone my age or younger I would think they are weird. This is not the deep south, not even Lynchburg. It's also the 21st century. People dressing up to go to Chili's or Applebees except maybe after church on Sunday would be considered weird as well. Short story, in Staunton I just ...

There's a little village in Nelson county named Lovingston. I think it's starting to get more artsy things moving in. If your husband likes bluegrass, he'll love that area. Being from Boston I hope you realize just how rural it is below Charlottesville. To me I-64 is an unofficial demarcation line through the state. Things are just different to me below it, and Charlottesville/Albemarle ...

Very sad. I don't know what the stats were when I grew up there, but I don't recall that much violence. Of course, as compared to Pittsburgh, where I live now, that is just a few months worth of crimes. We sometimes have several shootings in a week. Depends on gang activity. We also seem to have a lot of cops die in shootings here for some reason.

Lora, Sorry to hear of your bad experiences in PA. 1. Is it a lousy commute from there to the Norfolk area? YES. I wouldn't consider it for an everyday commute. It could take 50 minutes to over an hour. Could he work at Sentara in Williamsburg ? or Riverside in Newport News ? 2. Are there a lot of transplants there? YES, plenty. maybe 50%. 3. Will we stick out and be ...

Are you looking for something rural or something more suburban? If you want to be in Virginia but near Maryland, both options are possible, but you'll get more responses posting in the Northern Virginia forum. In the winter, at least, I'd say high temps in Northern Virginia average 40-45 degrees, with lows around 20-25, depending on how close you are to DC. It's not unusual to go a week ...
