You can always rent your home and become a renter... The two are not really related... Your rental will be reported on your tax return and the depreciation and expenses may work out in your favor. I know a few people that rent out their primary home and live/rent somewhere else... often renting a condo in Hawaii or maybe Florida. Your Tax Advisor would be my best guess for the answer.

Did you fill out an application when you gave them the deposit, or before that? Usually you fill out an application and they do a credit check, and then you give them your deposit. Then you sign the lease. Most applications I've completed state that if I back out of the lease, I forfeit my deposit. If you signed a similar application, you could be out the deposit. What exactly are the terms that you find problematic? Oftentimes lease...

Published (2009-11-30 10:00:00)
My water problems have now been resolved. I had to call the manager Saturday morning about the bathtub, and he called me back Saturday night. He snaked out the bathtub line and very dirty water started draining. There was nothing in there at all, but he tried to tell me that there was a small cap stuck in there, and when he didn't like the answer he got about that, he tried to tell me that it was hair, and to put a paper towel over the...

I'm not sure what the law says but why would you give first month's rent and security deposit before signing a lease? On every lease I've ever signed I give rent and security at the time I sign the lease. If they wanted something to hold the apartment usually they charge you a small fee to hold it for a day or 2. I had to give $100 non-refundable once to hold the place for 2 days. They put ...

Most places in my part of the country charge an additional pet deposit worth around 50% of the basic rental deposit (usually about $250) + $25/mo pet rental fees. I can't think of a landlord I've encountered that would bend their pet rules though, even at the offering of a deposit or fee. They have the rules and that's it. Maybe a townhouse with a resident landlord would consider it, but I ...

The legal way to get out of having a $2600 debt shown on your credit report is to either pay it or to get it erased. You are also allowed to have an explanatory letter attached to your credit report, if you can't get a situation resolved. But I think you need to attempt to get the charge erased first. To get the charges erased, you need to know the exact nature of the charge. If your rent...

I think you are overthinking this. How do you know that a landlord will not rent to you if you have been a victim of domestic violence? I don't know of a landlord that would even ask. It certainly isn't on standard applications. They don't care why you lived some place or why you left. They only want to know how many places you've lived in the past five years and if you've been evicted ...

find out who handles landlord disputes in your area. Oftentimes it is called the Office of Administrative Hearings, or some such similar title. Either in person or on their website you should be able to find some information about recourse. Landlords have a grace period to return the deposit, usually 45-60 days and that hasn't passed for you yet. It doesn't matter if they've leased it to ...
