My advice to the dude in Japan: No matter what city you choose.. Make sure you don't set the expectations to high. Phoenix never stood a chance because my expectations were astronomical. I read about Phoenix for years before I made the move. I visited it twice. Don't ever stay at a luxury resort when your visiting a city your thinking about moving to. My 2 trips out to Phoenix were 2 of the best weeks of my life. I thought Phoenix...

I'm surprised to learn that the percentage of renters is so high! Unless that is inflated due to apartment buildings? It seems unusual, though I have no clue if it actually is, for a nice area to be mostly renters.

To be honest, Warhol distanced himself from Pittsburgh for the bulk of his career. So outside of the museum, what you can see in Pittsburgh is basically the places associated with him before he left, plus where he is buried.

Whether or not it's artificial "fluffing up" done by the likes of Jake, and apparently Russel Crowe recently, I think we can all agree it's a good thing for the city after the Sienna Miller controversy several years ago.

In driving up and down Rt 8 recently, I noticed a sign for a flea market there in Glenshaw, directly across from what used to be Glenshaw Glass. (It's now Kelman Bottles, or so says their sign.)
The sign for the flea market, I believe, only lists Sunday hours. I have no idea whether it's any good or not...

Ok, not sure why this thread got resurrected after 2 years, but what's weird is that it took me two pages to figure out that the posters were arguing about Bakery Square. I thought they were talking about Wilkinsburg and couldn't figure out what "plaza with the Subway on Penn Ave" they meant.

I think they're mostly concerned about losing their views. I can't imagine anyone truly feeling that $110 will increase drug dealing and prostitution. Prostitutes are already paying those high prices for the other downtown hotels by scheduling an entire day's worth of appointments. It's not like they're going to save a fortune at the $110 rate. And it's not like $110 will attract prostitutes...

Pittsburgese isn't really about insults. It's more about pronunciation and blending words together.
Here are some: Pittsburghese: phrases
The examples are in the column on the left and the definitions are the bolded in the column on the right.

Litter. I want to kill people who throw their trash on the street (really). I know it's not unique to Pittsburgh; our German kid lives in a town that looks like it's out of a fairy tale and she says the litter problem here is no worse than there. It's probably because I came from Seattle, where you could eat off the streets. See? I can even say something nice about that bland ****hole.

yeah, it seems this is a baby step towards the spine line. certainly it's better than no change and I'd think those buses could be redeployed elsewhere if they actually built the spine line. perhaps this is the right approach, build the ridership base, and thus increase demand for a better long term solution (spine line). it actually seems like a sensible approach that should have been taken ...

Those varied measurements provide a better glimpse into metro economies.
Our stable home prices, low foreclosure rate, and solid sales are what launched Pittsburgh into the number 4 spot.
An unemployment rank of 24 out of 100 isn't bad alone, but unemployment isn't causing many foreclosures or slowing sales in Pittsburgh.
(Just look at those foreclosure rankings for some of ...

Sure, why not. But clear 44 degree days are only of note in a place with cold, cloudy winters. I made the point a few days back that the rainy climate of Oregon forces me to notice and value a sunny day. In a place like Phoenix or LA, it is hardly a scarce resource of note. In fact a 44 degree day would probably cause widespread panic! LOL! I suppose another example of supply and demand.
What...

Hey Bench Warmer,
I intended to say this on your former thread, but if sun is a major criterion, go Denver. It has sun in winter and thunderstorms in summer. Perfect. Much colder than Phoenix, of course, but I never felt that cold because of the sun. I think Pittsburgh sounds great, but by the sunshine yardstick there seems to be no comparison. If it were me, I would find the winters in ...

I was going to make some snarky comment, just for fun, but decided I'm being too feisty today.
Truth is, I think this is pretty cool. That is some high-powered competition. Do many of the tech gurus at CMU stay in the area? Seems like a great, affordable place for tech startups.

Check out Sampsonia Way on street view. The residents knew when google was coming to their street so they staged all kinds of funny scenes. Great stuff.
