I have a few gay friends and acquaintences in many different locations around the DC area and they all seem very happy living here. Takoma Park in MD is pretty good if you want to go North of DC. I can't vouch for the nightlife but there's not a whole lot of that in NoVA for anyone. Pretty much all the young people regardless of orientation head to DC for the best after-hours fun. Depends on what you want and what your life stage...

You will find every culture under the sun represented in the DC area; that is one thing you don't have to worry about. I think Falls Church and Vienna would suit your needs. Reston would work, too, but is a bit farther out and you'd be looking at a longer commute. I think there are more and newer apartments out in Reston that would work for you than in Vienna, though. Vienna is mostly made up of single family homes. Falls Church...

I haven't traveled in years. I refuse. Yep, I will be home. My parents will come over tomorrow (they only live 8 miles away). I'll be making my make-ahead gravy tonight and my pie crust. If I have time, I might even take a quick trip to Potomac Mills. They should be all stocked up in preparation for Friday.

Try this website, if you haven't already
Health Insurance - Affordable Health Insurance Quotes, Individual Health Insurance
It's unlikely that you're going to find decent individual health insurance for a couple in their 50's for under $400 per month. Many people with employer-sponsored group insurance plans pay premiums at that level.

This is Patrick Henry Library on the corner of Maple Avenue and Center Street. It is the busiest community library in Fairfax County.

Did anyone try Best Buy or WalMart? Were they zoos? I can't believe people camped out just to go to a Best Buy. I can appreciate the novelty of camping out but.... Brrrrrrrr!!!!
That might be fun in the summer, but it's way too cold to be doing that now!

I have a friend who just loves this place near Point of Rock in MD. It really sounds like a fun adventure to go there. I'll e-mail her and see if I can get the name for you.
We do the fake tree bit. Years ago I won a 18-foot one in a charity event (the sort that you see in hotels). Much fancier than anything I'd ever buy, but since I won it and since I also happen to have a two-story family...

hmmmm.....I would say RT 15 - but that's a bit W for you. I would avoid/get off I95 asap though - we have made the treck for Tday many, many times (VA to NYC) and it is never pretty. I95 has always been the worst of it.
good luck!

When I first lived in Washington, I had an account with NIH Federal Credit Union. I hated it. Their customer service is the worst in the world.
I opened a BofA account when I was in Los Angeles... moved to Cincinnati, and there was no local branch. Given the choices (local bank 5/3 was the most convenient) but a friend worked as a teller for PNC, so I opened an account there.

We're coming home to Nova for Thanksgiving. Dahlonega's a wonderful town but after a month here I'm more than ready to get back home. And if Nova's a ghost town, all the better--that would be like getting whipped cream on top of the pumpkin pie!

Try Sandbridge, it is about 10 miles south of Virginia Beach but much quieter and more family oriented. You are still close enough to the restaurants in VA Beach so that it is not a hassle to eat out but far enough away from the college crowd looking to hookup, so you won't have the crowds and noise.

You are crazy to think about going.
Visit your sister and her family another time, when everyone is healthy and the roads are not packed with holiday travelers.
Do you really want to spend 8+ hours in a car with two sick and coughing people, picking up some more germs at the various rest stops along the way, and risking a trip to the hospital in an unfamiliar location?
Your sister will ...
