Ava, though not the most exciting place I've ever been, is a pretty, quaint little place, The area somewhat reminds me of my home state of Ky., I feel very at home there. Granted, no big mountains there, but scenery beautiful, nevertheless. A great place to ride a Harley. Only a short distance from Branson and Eureka Springs, within easy day of Land Between the Lakes (Ky. Lake and Barkley Lake), St. Louis, Memphis, Hot Springs, Arkansas,...

Blue Moon over Missouri
Published (2009-12-29 20:02:00)
There will be a "blue" moon over Missouri on New Year's Eve. First time since 1990 and it won't repeat until 1028 so if you're out and about, look up! As most of you know, the moon won't actually be colored blue. A blue moon is when a full moon occurs twice in one month - the second being the blue moon. Now how many songs can you think of that would be appropriate to sing (or hum) on that evening?...

Published (2009-12-28 12:17:00)
In case anyone else checks these old threads, I can tell you that the Linn County Missouri area is quite alive but it is neither dying nor growing - I'm OK with that. I haven't met any racists here (but if there are any I hope they leave). This isn't the city or even a regional hub and that doesn't bother me either. There's work to be had for honest hard workers, especially ones with skills (plumbers, welders,...

Hmmmm, okay, I voted. Missouri is a great hunting and fishing state. So, retrievers would represent the state very well. Therefore, let it be that the Black Lab would fit the title of Missouri's State Canine!!!!

Unemployment benefits transfer...
Published (2009-12-25 06:29:00)
You will need to reapply for the benefits, also if you are retired or any other income you recieve they will count that money against your benefits. Every State rules are different, most other States just it depends on full time employment and the time frame you have worked usually the last 6 Months or so is how they figure your payments. You can google MO unemployment benefits and most of the information will be on the State website.

It's really really the middle of nowhere. Unless you want to be in some isolated land in the Ozarks, I can't think of any reason for anyone to ever live there. Most people are just too poor or/and scared to move.

i don't know the doctor situation in cape girardeau..... but you'd only be about a 3 hour drive from st. louis and its world class medical center.....
but i don't know how you are going to escape farming pesticides in any rural farming community......
to get a wide variety of shopping resources, you will likely have to be closer to a major city with its attendant air pollution ...........

Here's my experience with Chili.
About 25 years ago Mrs. & I were on our honeymoon. We were heading to the Ozarks. We had a pickup with a topper on it that we had a mattress in and slept in. We stopped at a park near the edge of town, it being about ten at night, pulled to the back where we could park, and got out of the pickup to get in the topper. Here was a big mangy looking dog that ...

After living in the south.....this town is not overly religious. In the south the people welcome you with...hi my name is and the second statement is what church do you go to? The people are friendly in Columbia... once you get to know them....and then they are very friendly. Down in the south everyone is friendly but it isn't genuine! The town is easy to get around, great restautrants, lots...

Nothing against Lake Taneycomo, but it simply looks to me like an ordinary river going through Branson, although very slow moving, if moving at all, where it is a resevoir, but does not have an interesting lake look about it. The fishing might be fine, but nothing great to look at. Table Rock, Bull Shoals, and Lake of the Ozarks (and Ouachita, Lake of the Cherokees, Beaver Lake, Beavers Bend ...

Only two gay bars in town to my knowledge-- Soco Club off Nifong and Arch and Columns on the Business Loop. Beyond that, I'll just suggest you check out Vox at columbiamissourian.com and Columbia's yelp listings-- and, since you're a student, wander around downtown and look inside some places.
Now, assuming you have a car or know someone who does, I can highly recommend two places that are a ...
