There are a lot of apartments, now, you have some choices to make about where in Sac. You want to be able to drive up I80 rather than 50 to Tahoe, 80 is 4 lane freeway, 50 is two lane mtn road. So, Roseville is a good location. Sac itself is a bit dreary. Sierra College in Roseville is a good CC. My son lives in Roseville (annoys me that he would live on flat ground, life is too short to live on flat ground, in my opinion) and attended Sierra...

Calabasas or San Luis Obispo?...

Calabasas isn't a dark horse... if you know L.A. at all, you know it's very nice and priced accordingly. Lots of celebrities and pro athletes living in the area. SLO might be a bit lower priced... but not by much. Both have starter home prices around $500k and up.

In LA County, we've already seen a decrease of donation prices do to increased competition. Agreed though that some regulation is needed.

I would drop Palm Springs in favor of Death Valley, as long as you are going to do the desert, you might as well do the desert.

I can't describe it. I can always pick out a native Southern Californian by subtle nuances in their speech, but don't ask me why. It's just there, and I guess I'm hearing it because I've been here for so many years.
This doesn't include affectations and niche forms of speech such as Valspeak and Surfspeak. Those are just ****ing annoying.

IIRC Champlain is not entirely in the US, part is in Canada. Excluding that and the Great Lakes, as well as man made lakes, I would have thought Tahoe was larger than Clear. Are there others?

There are several good neighborhoods with a short commute to the hospitals and the medical offices that cluster around them on the west side of the city. Consider neighborhoods such as the Mary Lake, Sunset Terrace, and the area around Manzanita Elementary school (Foothill Blvd). For a more wilderness experience, consider a home off of Swasey Drive. There are plenty of other good areas, but ...

There are many great schools and places to live in California. The question is whether or not you can afford to live in any of them. Your experience here will come down to that.

Visiting Yosemite in December is not tricky, the valley sits at an elevation of 4,000 feet, not a heavy snow zone, the all weather highway 140 through Mariposa and El Portal seldom needs chains.
Heck we used to drive in there in old Toyota sedans to climb at Christmas break.
