I know many of you are more well-versed than I in the academic area of political science, so a favor, please: our youngest daughter is a senior and is looking at colleges. She wants to study political science, possibly with an eye to law school afterward; she's very interested in humanitarian and social justice causes. Her dream job would be working within the Obama campaign or ...

Frequently there are occasions here on the fora in which you might like to interject one pithy or annoyed comment into a thread, but you doesn't want to get sucked into an argument, have that thread turn up forever on your "show replies to your posts" page, get dragged into a general trainwreck, or publicly announce your association with an unpopular opinion or action. This thread is ...

Today I've received another e-mail from someone I don't remember going to high school with. I've gotten about three or four dozen over the years. All are from men. All claim not to be interested in romance (nearly all mention that they're married). I e-mail each of them back and let them know that I'm not interested in corresponding with them. I guess I find it annoying because first,...

I just wanted to see if we can get all the night owls to post on one thread. What are you doing up so late? Since I'm procrastibabulous, I'm just putting off going to bed. I want to hear your excuses/reasons.

Rather than hijack another thread, I'm starting a new one, by quoting from the other thread. Quote from: john_proctor on Today at 01:27:05 PM Quote from: rroscoe on Today at 01:22:41 PM The correct medical term for a " partial birth abortion" may well be "partial dilatation and curettage." I'm not out to start a debate on abortion. But I should point out that to many of us ...

Philly's ahead of Washington right now (1-0) Glavin got dinged early and the score is now ugly, ugly, ugly. The Mets collapse is now near perfect. On the last day of the season, they may not only loose the division, but be eliminated from even going to the playoffs. Contrast that with the Yankees who have come back from nearly 15 games down to nail home the wildcard (and who are ...

What's the yard signage situation in your neighborhood? Do you put anything up, for any races, from President down to local dogcatcher? Or, are you like me, too chicken to find out if your neighbors will come to your house with pitchforks? (I'm sure that, as an academic, they know I'm in league with the devil, but at least I'm a quiet one who doesn't try to convert their children.)

No one has started a thread on McCain's VP choice yet? Or maybe I just can't find it. In any case, I'm waiting for the forumites to chime in

Inspired by a comment on another thread, as well as by my SO's note last night that I have developed a "nerdy" laugh all of a sudden, I was wondering: what is the nerdiest aspect of your personality? Your nerdiest habit? I realize that among academics, there's already a certain baseline of nerdiness we all share. So I'm curious about the really extreme cases. Anybody collect gargoyles...
