Pickled tamarind sauce = sour and spicy. Not sweet. Rita's is indeed on the left as you are heading up Georgia. I believe the nearest cross street is Monroe. From the ourtside it mightt look like a pure carry-out, but there is a small dining room inside. Polori = plain fritters. Nothing inside. I believe the dough is made with chick pea flour, so it has a distinct taste, but these are puffs, not at all like felafel which are dense....

Also, some Ethiopian restaurants will ask if you want it cooked or raw. Others won't and if you're American, will serve it cooked unless you specify that you want it raw. It never hurts to tell the server taking your order that you want it raw. They'll treat you better.

French Bistro in Georgetown area?

bistrot lepic in upper georgetown on wisconsin is charming, and has good food and service. http://www.bistrotlepic.com/ years and years ago i went to bistro francais, where our table of four was treated to very very mediocre food and absolutely horrible service. i always recollect that evening (it was packed, by the way) whenever anyone mentions it. isn't that place really just skating on its reputation from back in the day?

If you want to establish your cred, you can also order your kitfo "tire" (pronounced "tee-ray"), which means raw; in some places, just ordering it raw in English might take a few requests before they'll believe you. (You can also ask for it "leb leb", which *should* get you kitfo that is quickly seared but still mostly raw, but which in many places gets you the fully-cooked version.)

It is more bass like in appearance and is, according to Wikipedia, a bladderless flish that sinks to the bottom and waits for prey {shrimp, small fish and the occasional hapless swimmer} to happen by. Ugly but yummy! I'm just glad it didn't turn out to be a cover up name for the Northern Snakehead! I can type but I am having trouble getting back up out of my chair! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weaver_fish

Then maybe HKP is where Joe's was a couple of years back, and won't serve the truly hot stuff to non-Chinese.

Well, we had a great dinner for our rehearsal dinner at Addie's in Rockville. I'd consider that on your list, but also BlackSalt (at the time their private rooms hadn't been finished - so I can't say anything beyond that I love the restaurant overall).

Who knows? Every dish has different levels of heat as interpreted by the chef and possibly by who they think their target audience is. The complexity of flavors is a different story. You really have to eat at these places frequently to really make that call and I don't eat out enough. I'll admit that I haven't been to Joe's and SP more than once recently.

Maoz
Published (2009-11-27 21:35:00)
I went to Maoz today for the first time; I was the only one in there. I got a small falafel with hummus. I like the decor - it's very bright, cheery, and antiseptically clean. I have been to Amsterdam Falafel many times and really love it, so I was interested to see how Maoz would stack up. They are both good and I will return to both depending on which neighborhood I'm in when I get a hankering for falafel. These are the...

There has been a "coming soon" sign at the store's location for close to 11 months now with no action happening inside. I have a feeling plans have been put on hold. You could try emailing the company on their website.

Yes, we're pretty well past the season to get U.S.-grown cherries, I haven't seen them in a long time, not even flown in from overseas somewhere. You might have to wait a few months.

Not only was the service attentive, but they were excited to have non-Chinese ordering the authentic dishes. Once we told them "pretend we're Chinese, now tell us what to order", they were all over themselves throwing suggestions out to the table. I can't say that I'd drive all the way out here from MoCo, since Rockville is ground zero for the Chinese community in the DC area, but I'm glad to ...

Taylor Gourmet has tremendous hoagie sandwiches, high quality ingredients. The newly opened location at Mount Vernon Square is walkable from the Verizon Center. I personally loved my doner kabob at Urfa Tomato Kabob (around the corner from the Verizon Center), though there have been mixed reviews posted on this board. Nando's Peri Peri is affordable rotisserie chicken, also near Verizon ...

Han Gang has my favorite bbq order, their #1 galbi. Yechon is overall very good, hard to go wrong there as the constant stream of customers attests.

I don't think anyone can argue *against* either of your nominees; it's like arguing against Marino or Montana for best quarterback--there are other candidates, but those guys have to be part of the conversation. Once upon a time, I'd have argued for the stretch of Van Dorn between Stevenson and Edsall in Landmark; at one point, they boasted some great examplars of Japanese, Indonesian, Thai, ...

Iconic for lunch in DC is either Breadline, a sandwich shop near the White House or cf folks, a lunch counter. Both are open only for midweek lunch. Breadline serves their Italian Sausage sandwich on a ciabatta, and it is phenomenal. Get the flavored water to drink. cf folks should have their crabcake on Mondays. Or order from the chalkboard. Sit at the counter, for sure. A uniquely ...

I would check out Central or Bistro du Coin. I've personally never had it there (I'm not a huge steak tartar fan) but I've heard good things about the dish at both restaurants.

It's hard to go wrong with any of the places in the 9th and U St NW area. Etete is usually first on most of the Chowhounds' list, Queen Makeda and Dukem are close behind.

I'm not even sure there's a decent Hunan restaurant. Taiwanese is basically a derivation of Fujianese cuisine. Bob's Noodle Bistro is the best for Taiwanese (but I haven't been there for over 1 year).
