Charleston SC shrimp and grits
Published (2009-12-06 18:11:00)
I know that makes me seem cheap, but, please, ladies and gentlemen, let us not ignore tax and tip, $20 for a small plate of grits with some shrimp on it?

If you're not feeling tapas, do you know what you ARE feeling? My choices in your situation would include Laughing Seed, if you're feeling crunchy, Cucina 24 if you're feeling Italian, Modesto if you're feeling Italian and adventurous (mixed reviews there), of Chorizo great margaritas and quacamole excite you alot. I find the dinner menu at Table to be very enticing, but the two times have been there, albeit for lunch not...

The Vietnamese mini mall & grocery at Brentwood/Capital are closed. The sign indicates they will reopen soon under new owners. Painters have been working inside the mall section. I'll update when they reopen!

NEED RECS for Charleston at Xmas

Charleston is one of the most discussed cities on this board. I suggest you do a search and you will find lots of suggestions. Personally, I highly recommend Cru Cafe. Also, I'm no expert, but I'm not aware of any dim sum in C'ton, and if it does exist, I think you'd be better off seeking out the types of food that C'ton does better...seafood, lowcountry, etc. Here are a few posts to get you started:...

Hillbilly's BBQ in Charlotte

Noticed they are opening up in the old Carolina Country spot on Tyvola. It seems to be the 3rd location of this Gaston county based restaurant. I've seen the one right off 85 (Lowell / McAdenville exit), with the requisite wood smoke billowing out. Anyone have any info on this place? Will they be burning? Has anyone eaten at either of the other locations? Their website mentions mesquite wood in one section, which sounds very...

Might I add that Zambra is not really all "spanish tapas" - they have a very large, diverse menu and I consider them to be more "small plates" than tapas. We were there a few weeks ago and were content with 4 plates - scallops, bluefish, a veggie dish, some olives and bread. It was great. Definitely one of my favorites in Asheville. You can't beat the ambiance or the location if you want to be...

When the ball and chain lets you break out, try the pork belly and greens (I forget exactly what they call it on the menu). Oh....my. Thinking of it makes me drool on my keyboard.

Hello Ms. Lato, Might get interesting in that neighborhood! There is supposedly a franchise named "The Meat House" (sounds like a bad frat movie. . .) moving into the Rea Rd area (4810 Rea Rd) after the first of the year. I went searching for it this weekend and it's still a ways off. http://www.themeathouse.com We'll go from cryovac meat to dueling butchers - yeah! I found out they ...

At Central, I love the BBQ nachos, the dry spice jerk chicken wings, the smoked turkey, and any of their sides. For BBQ Shop, I think they have the best BBQ spaghetti and dry ribs. I also love their sandwiches on Texas Toast, especially the BBQ bologna. Alcenia's is great for soul food. BJ cooks everything there with love, and serves all her food in a great atmosphere. I will say, though, that ...

MARINA VARIETY STORE: " The Bear Island Specialty" L$8.99/D$14.50 The wooden booths and nautical theme relay a typical family-priced steak and seafood joint situated serenely at the crowded city marina and peering over the marshy grasses of the Ashley River. The shallow dish presented an amalgam of color, incuding a white sphere of butter-laden grits topped with a brothy caramel-colored ladling...

I love both ~ Holeman & Fitch and Abattoir. But, you can't get a reservation at Holeman and they only have about 30 seats, so I'd stick with Abattoir.

For Chinese I like Red Orchids in West Ashley. It's a bit higher-end than the typical Chinese take-out place. Basil is definitely my favorite Thai place, but it is a bit pricy and gets very crowded. I've heard Jasmine Thai, on James Island, is very good, but I haven't been there. Another place you might try is Party Kingdom Bistro, for pho. It got an incredibly good review in the City Paper: ...

Yes I know this place (if it is Gourmet Kingdom ). Never eaten there. I think if you don't have any food restrictions ordering off a menu without the English could be an adventure. It's not a secret place though the menu maybe. The question is do all the Chinese menu items do really well or was it just that one dish. Thanks for letting us know. It is rather dumpy looking.

I stopped in around 6 tonight to a mostly packed house that was standing room only by the time I left. The steamed mini buns are xiao long bao (soup dumplings), or their version of them anyway. While smaller with a little less soup content (aspic) than I am used to, I couldn't be happier to find them on a menu in town. They are supposedly made in house. More meat, less soup, thick(er) ...

You say "near" Greenville. Depending on what constitutes near, you could go up to Asheville to the Admiral. Do a search on Asheville if you're interested and you'll see it discussed to death. i understand they have an eclectic juke box. Closer to G'ville is West First , a fabulous brick ove pizza place in Hendersonville that also does pastas and other specials in the evening. great ...

I've been hoping to try this place, but haven't made it yet. Isn't the name of it "The Sky Club", though? There was an article in Mountain Express about it in June, 2008.

I would keep the res. at Woodfire. I don't think I'd take my mom (almost 70) to Pura Vida. A few year's back I didn't love the food at Pura Vida anyway. It may be better now.

I would imagine Ferlo's might have some (if they are still open) or possibly Davinci's or Conti's if worse comes to worse you could go to Southern Season. Or you could make your own (though this has goat's milk instead) http://zoebakes.com/?p=269
