Best BBQ Brisket in the Bay?

Until I do a head-to-head comparison, I'm perfectly comfortable saying they're both best. Uncle Willie's sauce (hot version) is the best I've ever had.

Generally, the best way to handle these things is while you're still at the restaurant, mid-meal and the management can try to save the evening. The staff are not mind readers. When you're paying that kind of money, you're entitled to ask for all kinds of things, never hurts to make your preferences known. Tell the servers that you want more privacy. Let the "overly familiar" server who keeps checking back...

The Oak Room at the St Francis Hotel http://www.westinstfrancis.com/pdf/Oak_Room_NYE_Menu_2009.pdf At $79 ( which includes a glass of Perrier Jouet champagne) it meets your $ requirements. Can't vouch for the food. I wouldn't call the Oak...

Oasis Market - Oakland
Published (2009-11-27 22:56:00)
I was in there today and was told the buffet is Friday afternoon only. There were a couple of women there who had come by hoping to have lunch at the buffet (the owner had told them about it at a previous visit), but it was still being set up at about 1:00. There was some confusion about what time the buffet was supposed to open. We were variously told it would be a few minutes, ten minutes and 2:00. I think rworange nailed it when she...

You're welcome, c. Interestingly, the chef appeared to be aware of the underdoneness, as one of the staff asked me if it was okay at his behest. I said it was rarer than I like, but that I wouldn't have eaten all the meat anyway, so it would be silly to make a fuss.

Leaf or Sheet Gelatin

Spun Sugar does (or did) have the gelatin sheets. Otherwise we couldn't find them anywhere and before we went to Spun Sugar we ordered some online (like 100 sheets). They weren't too expensive online if you can wait a week to get them.

I tried the Whole Foods crab, which originated from Pier 45, according to the sign at the 24th St. location I visited.. I'm not sure if all the stores are getting the same crabs in. These were smaller, averaging about $9 a crab (5.99 a pound, I think) and were very light in flavor, without much salt.

The smoky sausages where the backbone of my turkey stuffing, which was a total hit. Sauted with onions and fennel, tossed with italian parsley and golden raisins, mixed with bread cubes, moistened with plenty of turkey stock and butter. It came out great. Mostly thanks to the sausages. And for starters I served the wild board terrine along with an assortment of cheeses two versions of onion confit and some pickled beets. The terrine was not...

Seems a bit extreme to have a cover charge and a minimum. I get that it's valuable real estate, just strikes me as a bit much.

Thanks very much for the post! I last walked past the place a couple of weeks ago and could have sworn they wouldn't be ready until January. I'm glad I have a new Cantonese place downtown as I miss Joy Luck and wasn't tempted to return to Causeway Bay.

Oh, I remember the cardamon baklava purchased at Damavand. I just bought some kalonji (onion seeds) this afternoon and they are indeed teardrop-shaped.

I was updating the Restaurant record and forgot to mention that it is cash only. Also, they don't currently serve beer but have applied for a liquor license.

And pavlova for dessert. Mmmm. Great menu. http://www.chezpanisse.com/pgdownmenu... I'd consider a split of the René Geoffroy Rosé de Saignée. Fine rosé Champage goes with everything and is particularly delicious with pork. They have wines by the glass, sometimes one or more specifically selected to match the evening's dishes. They're always happy to suggest pairings. The more tables that ...

I believe one of the kosher butchers (perhaps in Oakland) carries it. At some point in the past year, I had bison at a friend's house who keeps kosher, and I believe it was purchased at a local store.

Sounds great. Do they serve it with the pickled daikon the way other Korean fried chicken places do? Have you had the garlic soy fried chicken at O.B. Town, and if so how does this compare? Sounds saucier and spicier. And do they have other fried chicken on the menu, besides just the wings?

i heard David Chang interviewed recently and he said that the dough is just like what you'd use to make plain white bread, if that helps at all . . . he said it was really a very simple dough.

I just returned and agree with everything you wrote. It doesn't seem like there are a ton of new products, just a lot more space and more logical. there were quite a few missing price tags, but that's my only gripe. It's a lovely space, contains produce, flowers, bulk goods, hot and cold prepared food, dry goods, dairy -- everything from the old Berkeley Bowl, just more spread out. Staff ...

You know, I see those signs at various Cantonese barbecue stands each Thanksgiving and I've never tried one. I'd love to hear your opinion if you try it. In past years, Cheung Hing in Millbrae has offered turkey too.
