MSP-craving breaded fried pork...

No, there was a Red Onion in Terre Haute. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the business moved elsewhere, though. Twelve Points was a little depressed and rough, at least back then. I think the Mexican dish might have been called a Chimichanga, but I'm not sure.

Bonefish in Novi is great for seafood, as well as everything else. Love the place! I also would second Gandy Dancer.

Detroit--which would you choose?

I've been to Cliff Bell's, and I can recommend it. Mind you, I was trying it on their "half off food" day of the week, which I'm not sure still exists, but the food I had was quite good, and I enjoyed myself a great bit. Only thing that sort of bothered me was a nearby smoker's cigarette, but that's not the establishment's fault. I'd go back.

msp - french macarons
Published (2009-12-13 21:33:00)
I haven't seen macarons at Maison Darras, though I'll bet if you asked, they'd make you some. The husband and wife who run this lovely place are very amenable to customer suggestions. And their desserts are great - I've tried the sable' cookies (like shortbread), brownies, and chocolate-chip cookies. All lovely.

Local/Sustainable in Metro Detroit?

The Grange in Ann Arbor focuses on local foods. Place has had mixed reviews, but I recently went for drinks and appetizers and was impressed. I'm going to give dinner a try--it's expensive, though. http://grangekitchenandbar.com/

I know that Axels in Loretto used to serve a very good fried pork tenderloin sandwich. I've moved away from the area but they used to have it. It seems like it wasn't on the regular menu, but served as a special. On Mondays as I recall.

I actually made someone there go to the basement to get a can of the crab so I could see the ingredients! And they happily did it! Now that's good hell!

South Bend Indian?

Wow, I had no idea. Thanks. I went today to the market next to India Garden, and it had everything I recalled from the old Star of India market. Seems we're decently provided for here, after all! By the way, I enrolled today in an introductory Indian cooking class at the Heritage Square Martin's. I'm not a total beginner myself, but I'm sure I'll learn a thing or two. The session is January 30 around 6pm, and you can...

Although I have no problem with lumpy and irregular macarons - isn't it all about the flavor? - you should try the macarons from Sweets Bakeshop: http://www.sweetsbakeshop.com/ They're both smooth and delicious. And, what's more important - they taste much better than Patrick's. (I can't rule on Pardon My French's version; I haven't tried them yet). I had these macarons first at this ...

Go to Restaurant Tallent and have the tasting menu (M-Th, only). One night, head to FARM and have the rabbit in mustard sauce. Moules Frites at either Tallent or Finch's. Any fish that Finch's happens to be roasting in their wood-burning oven. Braised rack of goat at Limestone Grille. Sushi and/or tempura at Mikado. Breakfast at Uptown. Brunch at FARM. Cupcakes from Blu Boy. Enjoy your stay.

I've seen Italian sweets in a number of locations but have not looked specifically for the torrone. In addition to Delmonicos, these usual suspects are worth a call: Buon Giorno 981 Sibley Memorial Highway Lilydale, MN 55118 (651) 905-1080 Fax: (651) 905-1082 Broders' Cucina Italiana 2308 West 50th Street Minneapolis, MN 55410-2202 (612) 925-3113 BCI@broders.com Cossetta's Italian Market 211...

Knight Cap in Lansing for steaks would probably be my top choice. Also Christie's Bistro in the Sheraton(?) on Creyts Road was pretty good last time I went (admittedly a long time ago), with salads made at table. Hopefully Lansing chowhounds will be able to weigh in...

A candy shop that has a large variety of items (i.e., more thatn just chocolates) is Regina's Candies on the NW corner of St.Clair and Fairview in St. Paul. Also, believe it or not, Tuesday Morning stores get in some candy and foodstuff items that might be similar to what you've found at Cost Plus in the past.

This place is a great stop in between Rochester and the Twin Cities. The coffee is roasted on site and the owners are there on a daily basis. There kitchen is pretty good, offering deli sandwiches and panninis. On the weekends they offer a brunch setting too, with waffles, egg sandwiches, breakfast burritos, etc. Overall- good coffee, good food, nice setting, small-town, friendly service.

The Crowne Plaza Hotel has a restaurant inside that serves a reasonable Sunday brunch, but it is very pricey. For just breakfast you might consider Charlie Parker's (700 North St. Springfield, IL 62704 Tel: (217) 241-2104) This resaurant was featured on the show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Jungle Jim's on North 9th is also a great breakfast place. Hope this reply isn't too late.

Berlin is a very, very small town. Wooster is not far away. On the campus of Wooster College is the Wooster Inn, which is a very nice upscale restaurant serving American food (a lot of the staff consists of college students, with their eagerness making up for the fact that they're learning). I'd consider it romantic. http://woosterinn.wooster.edu Two other restaurants in Wooster were ...

I have had terrific luck at the Plum Market on Lasher. There was a young lady of about 50-60 years of age that walked (shaved) me down many roads and knows what she is talking about. It has been at least 6 months since I have been at that location....I hope she is still an asset over there.

M is not corporate at all, were there pictures on the website? It's beautiful inside, and the food is brilliant! I took a friend for their 40th birthday and it was wonderful. A little more upscale than Barcelona, but then I think Barcelona might be my favorite restaurant in Columbus! I would highly recommend M.

I would concentrate on the pasta dishes. We had the orecchiette with braised rabbit and the crab ravioli. Both were excellent...the crab ravioli was in a rich cream sauce, so the small portion was about right, but the orecchiette had us both craving more. The rabbit looked sort of like pulled pork and was extremely tasty, like no rabbit I had tried previously. We also had the shellfish platter,...
