Best Wine Bar that also serves...
Published (2009-11-28 19:02:00)
Although not discussed much on the boards, Bottega del Vino has a fabulous selection of Italian wines by the glass, served in small carafes, using the "right" wine glass for each wine. There is a more casual area in front with great panini, and then a more formal and more expensive area in the back with a more extensive menu. Also, I believe that all the wines at Artisanal are available by the glass. The food is decent, but...

Glad to hear that someone was served the goose - it's on the menu but we have been told twice that it was not available after ordering it.

The W. Village location on Carmine St. near 6th Ave. (where the old Joe's Pizza was) has a little sign on the door that says it'll be closing permanently on Nov. 29. The sign also notes that the UWS location has been newly renovated and encourages patrons to head there.

Modern Bar versus Modern Dining...
Published (2009-11-27 16:14:00)
I have not been to the Bar Room, but the Dining Room is spectacular. It's also quite expensive. The food at Degustation is not up to the level of the Dining Room, BUT is nonetheless pretty great, the dishes are all interesting, some are more successful than others, and a rather unique experience, and the 10-course tasting is a bargain at $75. It's a tough choice but I don't think you will go wrong with either.

I enjoyed Amazing 66 for my Christmas lunch last year. It was a bonus that they serve goose as I was able to re-create the trappings of a traditional Christmas with a Chinese twist.

your best bets for any sort of humanely-raised, grass-fed or heritage meats will be the following places: - Craftsteak - Blue Hill - Savoy - Hundred Acres - RUB BBQ there's also an Argentinian Steakhouse on the UES - Hacienda de Argentina - that supposedly offers you the choice of grain-fed or grass-fed.

I thoroughly enjoy sitting at the bar at otto and eating/drinking. the bartenders really know their $hit. Bar Boulud and 'ino are nice choices as well.

Fairway shuttles can be arranged for groups of ten or more. Check if any large co-ops or university-type places have a regular stop. Maybe you could call Fairway and see if there are stops in your area. Our co-op near 125th St has two runs a week and I know one of the Teachers College housing units does, too.

The 五更腸旺 was awesome. I was intrigued by an entire section of the menu which was not translated. I'm attaching a scan of it in the hope that someone will translate.

Can you give us a more specific sense of the budget (including almost 9% sales tax and tip - alcohol?)? Any preferred geographic area? Happy to help with the challenge. (How old will the baby be?)

There's a Pain Quotidian on Madison at about 84th. And a fancy ??Dean & DeLuca or similar at 85th & Madison. Did you know that you can go into the Met Museum for $1. rather than the "requested donation" price? Just give them the $1. and ask for the entry button. Do that once, at least, to check out the cafeteria in the basement. It may work well for you. I don't carry the prices in my head, but ...

Try Sarge's next time. I adore their fatty pastrami. I've been getting the best pastrami sandwiches at Sarge's for over 17 years and no disappointments!

There's a second floor? I didn't know that. Great report! My wife found it when it was called New Pearl River after a hard morning of buying fake purses on Canal St. She asked around and was directed there. We ended up eating there three or four times in three days. Not as good as SGV but we were happy enough.

I hate to sound like a snob, but I can't think of any place less cool or more corny than Ninja. Locanda Verde (rustic Italian) is both cool and fun (although not particularly interesting aestetically) and would fit your budget. Blue Ribbon Sushi might also fit the cool criteria, I'm also very fond of Hell's Kitchen in midtown (very good, kind of upscale, Mexican, very welcoming but more semi-...

If 72nd St. is within your radius, try Seven's Turkish Grill. 158 W. 72nd, just a little east of Amsterdam. Excellent pides, meze and kebabs. http://petercherches.blogspot.com

You certainly can't go wrong with EMP. But two other places to consider which offer cuisine with unique flavor profiles are Corton and SHO Shaun Hergatt. The cost for the 3-course prix fixe at SHO is $69, the least expensive of these three restaurants and a steal for food of such superb caliber. EMP's is $88. Corton's is $85. Photos of one of our many dinners at EMP can be seen here: http...

Please wear whatever you like. Per Se does not require formal attire, but women do wear dressy clothes. Red is fine (Never heard that women of NY are wearing only black and white).
