Good First Date Place
Published (2009-11-25 23:17:00)
how do you tell your date, on a first date, that you intend to order carefully and that you selected the place with the idea that he, too, will be ordering carefully? seems beyond awkward to me. . . .

Help! Need Chinese Restaurant...
Published (2009-11-24 14:59:00)
Hmm, would going from buffet joints to full-blown, authentic Chinese restaurants be too much of a shock to the system? If not, then why not do something a bit on the "Wild" side and forgo the typical Hong Kong style banquet restaurants (like 888, NBC, etc.) and go to Luscious Dumplings. Wait, you say, Luscious Dumplings doesn't have a private room! Ah, but you see, that's the genius of going with Luscious Dumplings...

Looking for Spicy Indian Food
Published (2009-11-25 14:13:00)
If heat is what you seek, New India Grill on Westwood will make any dish really hot if you ask for it "very spicy." The food itself is pretty good, but not great. If flavor is what you're looking for, I highly recommend the veggie Indian at Bawarchi, though it's not particularly hot.

Dinner in Santa Monica tonight!...
Published (2009-11-24 11:23:00)
I really like Chez Jay. It's a great throwback to old LA. Just be forewarned that it's quite divey and that the food is not exactly cheap. See the pricing below: http://www.chezjays.com/dinner.htm the Musha rec is an excellent one and is definitely within your pricepoint.

Yunchuan Garden is the flagship location of a four restaurant chain which has operated under various names in the past and present, each name always beginning with Yun... something. The only other place I know of in the US where you can get a variety of Yunnan style food is Z&Y in SF Chinatown, though I see a place called Yunnan 168 is about to open up in San Gabriel. Consequently it's clear ...

Not sure what your definition of "pricey" might be, but we really like the Huckleberry Cafe. http://www.huckleberrycafe.com/ They are located @ 10th & Wilshire, about 5 minutes from the parking area for Cirque. If you go, don't miss the salted caramel for dessert...outstanding!

We dined there midweek a couple of weeks ago, and I just haven't gotten around to posting a review, partly because I feel like such an amateur compared to others here (no photos, I don't take notes, and don't have the patience to write a full-on, all-encompassing review). That said... I really liked both the food and the wine list. The three of us tried several menu items; all were tasty. We...

I too am desperately seeking a good burger. Father's Office is great when I want a gourmet one, but sometimes I crave a good old-fashioned patty that doesn't need any fancying up. I find the Counter's burgers bland and disappointing.

At El Tepayac, in East LA they have Manuel's Special Burrito, over five pounds worth of ingredients that fill two tortillas. It may not be the best but it certainly is the biggest.

Skip Original Pantry . Skip Pink's (unless you like people watching). If you get into town by afternoon on Friday, go to Philippe's the Original (near Chinatown, by Union Station) for a beef or lamb French dip sandwich, try their sinus-es-on-fire horseradish, and a bowl of their superb New England clam chowdah (Fridays only). Do have the heavenly pastrami at Langer's (I'm partial to #19) - I...

I like the Pantry. It's a greasy spoon and if you enjoy it at that level you'll be fine. I'd suggest the following: -Sourdough toast with coleslaw -Hasbrowns done well (nice and crispy) -Pancakes

You might consider La Botte in Santa Monica. The tables look close together in the pictures, but I didn't find it to feel cramped or loud at at all. Felt more intimate. http://www.labottesantamonica.com/
