All of the labels are old fashioned that's part of the look. No plebeian animals, bicycles or silly names, which in general terms I sort of agree with. That said, I promise I will give it a whirl.

In the past, my friends have celebrated NYE at the Danversport Yacht Club. They did feel the food had "gone downhill" the last yr they did it. I'll find out more, but thought I'd just put it out there. Maybe others on here have gone. http://www.danversport.com/

Oh, good one! I've actually been to birthday gatherings there on more than one occasion. Not super-dressy but you wouldn't feel out of place dressed up, and the food is excellent.

I can help with #4 and 5. For takeout pizza, Za on Mass. Ave. in East Arlington is good, as is Sabatino's, also on Mass. Ave. For baked goods, Iggy's in West Cambridge off of Concord Avenue is about the best in the area, IMO. (Their bagels are particularly good.)

New Shanghai has a private room with lazy Susan tables. Great combo of Beijing and Sichuan cuisines (but no Shanghainese to speak of anymore). http://mcslimjb.blogspot.com/

Sorellina's or the Market...

Between the two, I'd pick Market. You can read my (too long) review here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/6670... Sorellina is good, but not particularly inspired or special. For Italian, I'd go to Erbaluce, which continues to wow me in surprising ways. Whatever you do, enjoy!

Russo's Turkeys

I find it's a little salty, but you can thin it out with water and it's fine. I make gravy from the drippings of my brined turkey every year.

and another memory that I think might help with the salt issue: I believe my dad used to soak the herring in milk.

Bisuteki in cambridge just reopened this past weekend. It took nearly three years so I hope it was worth the wait!

Russo's in Watertown on Pleasant St. (just over Bridge St. from the Nonantum area) makes a good Italian sub. Crusty sub rolls from Quinziani's, generous portion of salami, mortadella, capicola, provolone, hots, pickles, oil/vinegar, the works. Prosciutto (I believe) is an additional $2. The small size is quite large and only $4.99.

As you seem to be in Belmont Arax in Watertown usually has them. Keep in mind the fuyu varieties can be eaten right away hard and crunchy, but the Hachiya (pointy) can't be eaten until they are very ripe (mushy) which can take a month. I love both but they are very different. http://www.tonytantillo.com/fruits/pe... If they don't have them at Arax, any of the Asian markets has them for sure ...

I don't know but my first guess would be Baza in Newton or Bizarre in Brookline or Allston. The Russians seem to have a huge range of herring and smoked fish and Baza seems the best and broadest. let me know if you find it.

My feeling is that you not worry about having Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving day. There will be plenty of other Thanksgivings to have. This will be the one you'll look back on and say, "we had pp&j and grilled cheese sandwiches with apple juice." When hubby is all better, you'll have yr Thanksgiving feast! If you're really out of food, perhaps you have a friend or two who can help ...

I really like this place. The wine selection reminds me of Brix - well-chosen, interesting, and not overpriced (though with few bottles less than $15). I'm so glad it opened because Central Sq. probably has the worst selection of liquor stores of any major neighborhood in the area.

While I'm not able to specify a restaurant with your budget in mind, I will say, you can get dressed up to go anywhere. I've seen folks wearing jeans at the Capital Grill. Personally, I pretty much get "dressed up" whenever I go out. Put on your finery, and Happy Birthday!

How authentic are we talking? The places that come to mind and would barely meet your budgetary requirements are Cottonwood, Rattlesnake, and Cactus Club. I think the food at Rattlesnake is the best out of the three. Get the nachos.

The samosas at the Indian place in the Super88 courtyard are pretty close to the British original. (I lived in the UK for 9 years.) Other places you should know about: Up Rt 1, near Danvers, on the west side, is a British food shop, where you can get all kinds of delights -- wine gums, proper baked beans, etc. Don't THINK there are pastries, though, but worth checking out. Sorry I can't ...

Unless your kid is a terror I think Hammersley's would be fine. It's not a sedate place. Then again, if he is a terror no place would be fine. We always took our kids to nice restaurants without a problem, but you know your son better than I.
