Smithy Granite Machine Quality

Enco has a small 9x20 lathe (Model #893-1273 ... www.use-enco.com ). Or, similar JET, Grizzly, Lathemasters...etc. Small import lathe that will do 90% of your bike work. Can also do light/small milling with a Palmgren or similar milling adapter on the tool saddle. Handles most bike sized drill operations with the benefit of power feed when held on the tool saddle. Too many people see/hear of milling and can't understand that the typical...

Smithy Granite Machine Quality
Published (2009-12-26 23:59:00)
A friend of mine owns a custom machine shop that makes EXTREMELY important and exacting parts such as those use in the Space Shuttle, large airplanes and satellites. He has been a machinist for 30+ years. He offered to give me advice between the Smithy 1324 Industrial machine and the Shopmaster Patriot. He looked at everything on the Smithy site and told me that it, for a 3 in 1 machine, looked pretty good and he could not find fault with...

Mandrel Bender in S. Wisconsin??
Published (2009-12-26 07:02:00)
you may have issues finding a die and a mandral for the size closest size would be 1 5/8" that,s a very common size as it,s used in dragracing . the wall thickness is odd as well .137" you can get .134" wall in DOM but not commomly stocked at least out my way and stay away from ERW if you want an accurate wall thickness , ERW is typically 10% thinner then what they list , DOM on the other hand is typically with in 0.001"...

Mandrel Bender in S. Wisconsin??

Thanks Thanks for the suggestions. After talking to some places it is obvious that no one has tooling in metric dimensions. It seems that only the big guys have mandrel benders and their interest in bending two tubes is pretty limited. Woolf Aircraft Products near Detroit is willing to think about it - they are a fairly big production bending company. I learned lots more about bending heavy wall tubing on the Offroad Fabrication Network...

You will get both good and bad opinions about a Smithy.....most of the opinions will come from people that have never owned one. I have had a Smithy Granite 1324 for over 7 years. I had some trouble with the motor and the speed controller with mine. I replaced them both. When mine was under warranty, they shipped the controller and the motor to me with no problems. Anything I have ...

Ok so in between working on orders I got some more done on the English Wheel. I have to say though, this this is literally kicking my butt!! Late time I didn't yell scream or cuss, this time I did because it was a stupid mistake! Anyway! Back to the project. My thought was instead of cutting holes and welding flat plate in I will machine down some tube then connect ...

To make the door I cut out a "D" shape in the bottom of the barrel, and used the cutout piece as a backing to a piece of plywood. Those luevured (sp) holes are eve vents that I got from a siding place down the street stuffed with HVAC filter elements. These are my intake ports that allow air to flow into the chamber and out into the shopvac....

Heard plenty of people say "I wish I had a bigger lathe...", yet to hear anyone say "I wish I had a smaller lathe..." Strikes me as a lot of money for the lathe, no one seems to want those anymore because they're not CNC. Mills seem to be worth more, but not sure about that much more.... The moving cost, that's ridiculous. Way too much money and paying double to move two? The ...

I've not used one of those, but I'm wondering if there isn't too much weight on the vibration mechanism to let it vibrate enough. 15 lbs of media, plus 80% full on water may be too much for it. Or it's going to taske longer than 60 minutes. or it's H-F Qualtiy. Does the manual for it recommend how full to fill it? I've only used a vibratory tumplet in a jewelry ...
