Food transitioning: it hardly...
Published (2008-11-22 17:06:00)
I'll just throw out there, there are plenty of people who do no transition at all, especially between higher quality foods. I've brought many animals home that the people sending them provided no changeover food. That makes it kinda hard to do a gradual switch, and the chins do just fine with cold turkey. I'm not advocating an abrupt changeover. When I switched the entire herd over to a new food, I did a 50/50 mix for a month...

Eating Carefresh
Published (2008-11-23 00:06:00)
LOL, see HM??? People appreciate you I used carefresh until I got too many cages and it became a little too costly, but when I did use it, most of the chins would at least taste it. I did have one that would actually eat it, but not too much...never noticed any problem with him, either. Unless your chin eats A LOT of it, I wouldn't be worried.

Food transitioning: it hardly...

I would be a little careful with younger chins...I had a very bad experience changing from Tradition to Mazuri, which are both quality feeds- and I went slow. I think they did exactly what your boys are doing and just ate the new stuff. The one that had the most problems did not like hay much at all either, so that may have been the problem. Runny poo is not fun. I now use Lifeline and extra probiotics when I get new animals and need to change...

Hay and pellets

That's great that they don't sell animals. I think that the world would be so much better if pet stores didn't sell animals. At least then the stupid people who breed pet store animals with no pedigree would have to buy from a breeder, who probably would be smart enought not to sell their animals in the first place. Ahhhh.... a dream world.

How do you mix your hay?
Published (2008-11-21 03:07:00)
My hays are stored separately but when I feed a blend, I will mix the different types in the hay racks. I feed timothy hay always and will blend in other grass hays and grain hays in on different days.

So my girl Heiney has always dug a bit in her food bowl, dumping a little bit here and there, but now I give up-this is just a pain... She will put her two front paws into the bowl, round up all the food to the front of the bowl and then THROW IT ALL OUT!!! Every last piece. Now I don't buy crap food, this is high quality expensive food (which she has always eaten). I cannot keep this up ...

Kokomo has been eating his Carefresh bedding - is this a problem? We searched through the forums, but the results were pretty inconclusive. He still eats his pellets and hay normally, but at least a few times a night, we'll catch him sitting, just munching on a piece of bedding - more than just taste testing. He nibbles it just like anything else, so we're not as concerned about a blockage so ...

Hey,most of you may know this already but I hadn't seen it mentioned (although I may have looked in the wrong places) but Pet Food express carries Oxbow hay and pellets I had heard people talking about petsmart carrying it sometimes but hadn't heard of pet food express so thought I'd give people a heads up. I also have no clue if it's at all stores but they have it at 3 stores around me. Thank ...

So I was unable to find a Manna Pro dealer in our area, and I decided I would like to switch over to a more easily accessible food. I found Oxbow and so I started switching them over to it in the 1:4 ratio (1/4 Oxbow, 3/4 Manna Pro). In the morning, all of the Oxbow pellets were gone, and they had scattered most of the Manna Pro around their food dish. Should I keep giving them Manna Pro as well,...

I agree that their consumption of hay varies. I notice some days they eat more and some days less. I'll hand feed them hay during playtime...they seem to enjoy it and so do I A couple days during the week I'll mix in some Orchard Grass just to give them something different.

I finally got the new batch of APD in yesterday. It's awesome! I bought 10 lbs of timmy and 5 lbs of mountain grass. For those of you that feed a variety of hays, do you 1) Feed one kind of hay one day, and the other on the next day? 1) Store the hays seperately, and then put a little bit of each in the hay box? 2) Mix the hays together when you get it, and keep it in one container?...

I was given a standard boy tonight; a college girl made an impulse purchase, and didn't have any time for him, so we took him. He's about a year old, on Charlie Chinchilla food, no hay, wood ledges or chewies. I feed Mazuri and Oxbow hay. He's going to town on the hay and wood ledges. Is it safe to do a cold switch from CC feed to Mazuri, or should I do the 30 day gradual change? I ...

Selecting calf manna - 11 new posts
Started 1 week ago (2008-11-15 19:56:00)  by Jenni
It appears that manna pro makes several types of calf manna (for horses, rabbits, cattle, etc.). Is the horse variety the one that is used for chinchillas? Apparently the local Farm & Fleet sells 10 lb. bags for $8, which is ultimately cheaper than buying 1lb. and paying $10 in shipping charges. I can just donate the extra 9lbs. to the local humane society.

I was just wondering if this diet is suitable for chinchillas, as I know that many rabbit diets are ok. It's made by a lab company that makes top-of-the-line rat food, so I was wondering if the rabbit food would be good enough too? Crude protein 16.90 % Crude oil 3.00 % Crude fibre 14.30 % Ash 8.00 % Nitrogen-free extractives 47.70 % Carbohydrate 56.70 % Starch 19.30 % Sugar ...

This may be redundant from another archived thread, but I don't think so from a quick browse, apologies if I'm wrong... Are there any rabbit pellet brands that currently still put in growth or other hormones (for feeding meat rabbits)? Or is this entirely a thing of the past now? This occurred to me because a friend of mine uses Manna Pro Sho and we're thinking of converting over to ...
