Native American flute tuning...
Published (2009-12-18 11:41:00)
Native American flutes are usually tuned to a pentatonic scale with five holes, with some having a sixth hole which can be left covered with a wrap of material or, uncovered to give a six hole major scale. Am I right in assuming that the pentatonic scale could be the same as the one used in shakuhachi- DFGAC (or equivalents shifted up/down several notes)? (As a small aside and one which is perhaps appropriate for this festive time of year-...

One world trading has a ton of flutes including those by Jeff Whittier (which are highly recommended). http://www.one-world-trading.com/index.shtml You could also check out the FAQ and Forum at Knowyourraga http://www.knowyourraga.com/

Bansuri: purchasing/playing/info
Published (2009-12-18 09:14:00)
Hi All, I am a beginner flautist, although I have played the piano, clarinet, saxophone and trombone. I have always wanted to play the flute. I like the sound of the bansuri and have found a couple of songs that I particularly like (Akmal Qadri) so I would like to learn to play the Bansuri. Here is the problem. I don't know what to beware of: (I have read the cheapy flute forum) and how much a bansuri flute should cost. I would rather...

Anybody playing the capped Shawm? I got an A Shawm from Alban Faust through my interest in Scandanavian folk music and Ale Moller in particular. I've also picked up a Harjedalspipan and double pipe both A, a Prillar Horn ( Cow's horn) and a couple of bone flutes from Naturinstrumenter. I'm fascinated by these kind of instruments and intend to get a few more.

these pages may help: http://www.anubodh.com/carnatic_flute.htm http://www.anubodh.com/Carnatic_fing_ch ... Chart.html Sa Ri Ga ma Pa Da Ni Sa is a major scale i.e. if the tonic is choosen as C then you got the scale of C D E F G A B C' But note that the tonic Sa could be choosen as any note, not just C. You may simply use a flute of a different length.
