If you can keep humidity above 40% RH then things will be happier - wood as well as reeds. If not, then at least relatively constant, and above 20%. You may need special reeds for anything below 40% and even that seems to be too dry for many reeds. If there are "ideal" conditions I'd say about 60% to 70% RH, but that is probably impractical for your climate. I think that big humidity swings are risky for the reed's...

Hi Bill, Very nice recording and thanks for posting it. Did you do any work on that Taylor set? There are photos of it by Paul Reid on D'Arcy's website but here's one: (I hope Paul doesn't mind me posting the photo here.) Have you any up to date photos of the set?

Hi y'all, I was contacted directly by the seller of the CD set who did legitimately purchase it during the time when it was for general sale. I offered my humble apologizes for our collective amnesia and my clearly inappropriate reaction. Probably time to end this thread... Michael

The humidity is always a problem. Same for me in Germany. We have about 25% in winter in heated rooms. But a real problem is not a low humidity but a high one above 75%. There a reed will become much softer and will be tuned down. A reed adjustment like shifting the bridle or closing/opening the lips is always necessary throughout the year. If you'll get a set from Ireland where the reed has ...

Hi everyone, I have a new set coming, so it's time to sell my current chanter, bag, bellows, and drones. The chanter is a concert D by Tim Benson--it is Cocobolo wood with four brass keys (Cnat, Fnat, G#, Bb), and brass top and integral mounts (continuous with wood) giving it a cool old-world appearance. I recently had the maker make a new reed for it (included) and improve the tuning. There is ...

We have been supplying our pipes fitted with EZEE-DRONE reeds for some time now. They are made by our friends at Pipedreams. Pipedreams are one of the major makers of reeds for the GHP and they have adapted their famous plastic reed for use in uilleann pipes. The reeds are proving an excellent reed for all the climatic changes we have come across over the last two or three years. They are ...
