The meaning of half life
Published (2008-11-19 20:05:00)
Throughout the books the term half life is often used. What does it exactly refer to? The first time it's used by Firenze: ...it is a monstrous thing to slay a unicorn...The blood of a unicorn will keep you alive, even if you are an inch from death, but at a terrible price. You have slain something pure and defenceless to save yourself and you will have but a half life, a cursed life, from the moment the blood touches your lips. It...

The exact quote I think, was " Yeah, Quirrel was a great teacher alright. He just had the minor drawback of Lord Voldemort sticking at the back of his head." My other favourite is Sirius speaking to Harry after he's informed of plans for the D.A. " Do you think your father and I would have laid down and taken orders from an old hag like Umbridge?". You go Sirius! This line from Sirius is probably...

I also remember from CoS Molly Weasley "looking very much like a sabre-toothed tiger", which is a creative way of expressing the woman's emotional expression in CoS. But then again, Molly's never been very subtle with emotions.

Which is your favourite animal?...
Published (2008-11-19 19:14:00)
I'm practical with a touch of flash--I'd probably buy an owl, and it'd probably be snowy (like Hedwig) or a horned owl (like the owls of Disney films). My favorite animal from the series--wow that's a tough one. Fawkes is probably my favorite, but if I had to go with an animal that's generally considered to have less than human intelligence (but only slightly less), I'd go with a hippogriff. Again, this is a tough...

OK, here's my other characters...had to go off last night. Voldemort : I thought that inspite of his skill, talent, charisma and intelligence he was deluded. And sad. And it strikes me how he would change the world if he had made used of his intelligence...for the good cause. But honestly, he left a better impression (though I can't say if it's better or worse) on me than villians in other books. Dumbledore : Eccentric,...

I just realized that I forgot Neville (and a couple others)! Neville: I thought Neville was a very sympathetic character, with his low self-confidence and the fact that he didn't seem to be very good at magic in general. But early on I did like Neville. I liked him even more as the series progressed, and now he's definitely one of my favorite characters. Voldemort: I almost think Voldemort was scarier before we'd ever met him,...

Appologies if this has been discussed befor, but there were no results 1.If you were going to Hogwarts which animal would you buy? 2. from the whole series which animal did you like most? I think I'd buy an owl, but cats would'nt be bad, and my favourite animal was Crookshanks but I wonder how did Hermoine get rid of him when she was going with Harry ... I just thought of starting this thread because I was revisiting HP in general today, and I had forgotten how big apart of my childhood it was and how much I enjoyed it. I was re watching some old interviews from way back during POA and man...it certainly does feel like an end of an era. Some of my most favorite memories are: -The first time I saw HPSS when I was 8 years old. -Watching...

This was being discussed in the Snape thread, but I thought I would move it here as to not veer the discussion away from the topic. I absolutely love the scene in OotP when Harry tells Snape that he's trying to decide which curse to use on Malfoy. Harry's brutal honestly just always cracks me up. And McGonagall was excellent too, because she still took away the ten points from Gryffindor ...

If you can, think back to when you read HP for the very first time, and, verily, met the characters for the first time as well. Especially if PS/SS or CoS was your first book, you surely had impressions of the characters that may have changed or stayed the same as you continued reading the series. This is not limited to just people who have, for example, started with OotP and then decided to snap...

Do you think all the spells everywhere are the same? It would get pretty annoying if there were 78 different Alohamora spells I bet they are the same everywhere. What do you think?

On the Hogwart's Express in book #1, Hermione claims to have practiced a few charms from her textbooks before. She was muggle-born, so she'd have been the only w/w in the house. Why didn't the MoM bust her for performing underage magic?
