Do not use those additives unless the thinset manufacturer says to. Those guys have spent millions in research and development money, so you don't need to do any chemistry research. Follow the bag instructions, feel better afterwards.

Yer gonna need a bigger level. That little thing is really cute, but we are looking for 3 or 4 feet. Span that distance and tell us how many stacked quarters can slide underneath.

Lesa, it'd sure be helpful if you'd keep your project questions on a single thread so folks who might wanna help can see what you're working on and what's been previously asked and answered. I've combined your last two threads here so you can bookmark it and use it for all your project questions. We can give it a more generic title any time you'd like. I'm not much familiar with Fiberock, but I do believe it...

Jim, Once you start with the grout saw and your arm feels like it wants to fall off you can go down to Harbor Freight and pick one of these and one of these and make your life a whole lot easier. I've done the grout saw thing and it is tedious. And if you slip you'll scratch the tile...almost guaranteed. The multifunction tool makes grout removal much less of a chore. Brian

Don't think so. No way that I know of. That lead pan is probably in need of replacement anyway.

Other types of board, such as Durock, have tapered sides so that the taped and mortared seams don't rise above the primary board plane. I am not sure of the Hardie products. However, I think your method is standard. The mesh tape allows thinset to ooze between the mesh, capturing it. The gap between boards is standard practice as well. You can navigate to jameshardie dot com for install instructions.

Pirate, I did some test samples of the aquamix stuff. It worked great and was really simple to apply. I just made sure the grout was clean and free of dust. Applied a small bead from the bottle. Then with a dry toothbrush scrubbed it for about 30 seconds. Let it dry for an hour, came back and just wiped it down with a moist towel to remove the excess and it looked perfect. Now that was only about 5 feet of grout I did. I cant imagine doing all...

Hey guys, I need some advice here. I want to make sure this is done exactly right! I am re-doing the walls in my shower with ceramic tile. First, I tore down the old tile tub surround down to the studs. I am going to keep my existing ceramic tub from 1985 because it's in great shape. I bought backerboard to re-do the walls with but am not putting it up until I can get this question answered. Now ...

1) TriSodium Phosphate based cleaners. Spic and span, etc.
2) Caulking is for containment. You can use just about anything you want.
3) I think I agree with Suntouch. All the heat mat folks are saying the same thing.
When you get to grouting, I suggest a caulk joint where the floor starts to cantilever. Place it over the exterior wall. My thinking is that the floor will flex ...

Like any other tiling project, first make sure that your basic structure is suitable for tile. So tell us what your floor is made up of, etc. Use the Deflecto tool at the top and tell us what you come up with.
Making the whole room a "wet room" is doable. Tying the shower pan waterproofing into the rest of the floor (including the toilet flange) is what you're aiming for. I think the ...

Marty, if that top is solid wood (not plywood), you won't be able to tile that with any approved tile methods, unless you first install a sheet of plywood. You may be able to remove the the top and replace it with plywood. You would then add an underlayment, waterproof it, and set your tile.
If it is plywood, you still have a problem, as it probably won't be exterior grade plywood. I think...

Silly Girl,
Welcome to the Forum! You should use a modified thinset to set the Ditra to the plywood and an unmodified to set the tile to the Ditra. Both should be "premium" thinsets not the cheap $5-6/bag stuff. If push comes to shove and there has to be some compromising you could use VersaBond for the entire job. You'll void your Schluter warranty that way but you'd still end up with a...

If you've watched the Ditra installation video on the Schluter website, it explains everything pretty well. Hard to mess it up.

Just realized that the bull nosing the top of my shower knee wall would look so much better with a bull nose of the exact size---am using 1/4 in ceramic tile. Does it make any difference whether I use a 3/8 or 1/2 profiler wheel on this tile?? Thanks for the help.

Hello and Welcome Alfred,
I am sorry to hear that things didn't turn out as planned with your install.
I just removed about 200s/f of grout joints yesterday from a 12x12 marble floor that had been waxed and burnished over the course of a few years. I used a Dremel Multi Max oscillating tool to remove the grout, though its age and presence of wax made it extremely difficult. With your ...

Mark,
Have you read much about waterproofing? Backerboard is not waterproof....
You seem resigned to lumpy out of square walls. Is the foundation / frame still moving?
If you have settled those issues then tile layout is where you need to be.

Welcome, Rex.
We'd need to know just how the wall/window transition was constructed to help much. But in general, if you plan to do a Kerdi shower, I'd want to attach my Kerdi to the window (presuming the block unit is, itself, watertight), then tile over that edge.
Only thing I'm real comfortable making a joint like that with is Kerdi Fix.
My opinion; worth price charged.

Not crazy about OSB, but Schluter says Ditra over it is OK, that said, screw it down well every 6 to 8" throughout, then install the Ditra, use shorter screws if worried about hitting a joists, but with Ditra, no big deal.
As for the transition at the doorway, if a different flooring is outside the doorway, install a marble, granite or wood saddle, if the height is the same you don't want a ...

Did your shower actually leak or did the seam just get darker when submerged?
I flood test all my Kerdi showers, and while the seams darken a little, they have never leaked. Water can penetrate a little bit into the seam, but it can't get through a correctly done 2" overlap.

Welcome to the forum, Myles.
How's about you pull off the greenboard, install 1/4" furring strips on the studs of the "problem walls", then proceed with installing 1/2" cement board? Would that satisfy moving the tile forward enough to clear the tiling flange of the tub? Can you share a picture of the walls you have a problem with? I ask, because furring out a "common wall" that continues ...
