Quote: Yes, without faith in Jesus, I believe their repentance is worthless, beside some temporary value to society in that they treat others well. Raven, You need to read the book of Jonah who was sent to the heathen city of Nineveh to gain their repentance. They all repented and the Lord changed his mind and did not punish them. Jonah 3:10 This was long before the time of Jesus. You should also read the Parable by Jesus of the Tax Collector...

Doug, Having studied some greek (ancient Homeric), I'm not sure I agree with that use; however it is worth the discussion. I would probably take the meaning here as more along the lines of the primary definition given below. That having already been saved, I now "perform" that salvation (i.e. live it out), not that my action accomplish my eternal salvation. From the evangelical perspective, the word "saved /...

LASaxman wrote: Larry, Is there some record of Adam and/or Eve being baptized? Some of their descendants survived quite a flood... Does that count? But, in all seriousness, they lived before the institution of sacramental baptism, so they didn't "need" it per se (just as Adam didn't need circumcision, for instance). My counter-example is only meant to refute a spurious assertion that all need to be born out of...

Hi Terri, I think you should first read/study about your own catholic faith before comparing with others. It might confuse you if you do 2 at a time. Good resources for your research: http://www.newadvent.org http://www.scripturecatholic.com http://www.staycatholic.com

I'd just point out that if you read that verse plainly, it says work "out" not work "for." But we do read that verse plainly. "Work out" is translated from the Greek word katergazomai : katergazomai TDNT Reference Root Word...

It is His Light

It is His Light, our Lord Jesus the Christ, that causes the warmth of Everlasting Life. For in His Light no one is threatened but the threatener. No one is deceived but the deceiver. And no one is hated but the hater. The blamer and the condemner, have no place in His Light. The blamer threatens and the condemner hates and commandment need no interpretation only that it will be fulfilled. “Let there be Light” is a commandment that is...

When the other apostles ran to the tomb upon hearing the news of Jesus' missing body, they reached there first, but they didn't go in, waited for Peter to go in. Why don't they go in since they reached there first? Fred, Cephas means "rock" as does Peter. It was his nickname by Jesus. I imagine Cephas and Peter are the same...

From dicussions in this forum and with some of my family (some of whom are Catholic and some of whom are ex-catholic) I understand that the Catholic belief of salvation is a process. From what I understand there is no one point in earthly life that a Catholic believes you become "saved" and eternally ensured of salvation, but that through your life of faith and works your travel toward salvation...

Hi, I am new to this forum and I am certain that there probably are threads already with this request. If this is a duplicate, maybe someone can send me to the original thread(s). Anyway, I am (obviously) seriously contemplating conversion. My whole life I have been very "religious/spiritual". I have always studied the Bible and religion in general. I have studied the Bible and various ...

I guess I am just seeking advice and the opinions of others, from both Catholic Christians and non-Catholic Christians. I am Catholic. I have never been to another church and did not know about the many differences between Catholics and Protestants until recently. I am still learning as well. I have a few friends who I love dearly that are non-Catholic Christians. Sometimes they tell me ...

friends: I'm having a small debate with a man who is a "Quaker," he uses the term "Friends," about baptism and "is it necessary?" I mentioned that Jesus told Nicademus that "one must be born of water and spirit" in John 3:5 as just one reference to it being necessary. He had some different beliefs on that passage. I know that the historical Catholic interpretation of this passage is that it ...

The reason I ask is that my Grandmother who died 3 years ago was a Christian, but not a Catholic. I do believe that she is in heaven where one day I will meet her again. But what is the Catholic position on this? Thank you. John

Clergy and lay delegates of the theologically conservative Fort Worth Episcopal Diocese voted overwhelmingly Saturday to dissociate from the Episcopal Church and temporarily associate with a more orthodox Anglican group. About 80 percent of nearly 220 delegates voted to leave, with both clergy and lay members voting in approximately the same ratio for the split. Supporters of the measure say ...
