OK lets be clear about something. Before we had Speedlight's with HSS or FP modes you could only work as fast as the max sync speed of the camera. With strobes and triggers the max sync speed in many cases isn't even as fast as the max sync speed. That spec is based on using a branded TTL Speedlight, not strobes. So if we're talking about studio strobes, which is still what most pros shoot with on location it can only be done...

I changed my mind. I don't feel like modifying the cables. I'll get these instead for my RF-602 receivers to be used with my AlienBees.

Regardless of brand, the power discussion is still relevant. You can overpower your studio. The suggestion that you can always turn them down isnt always true.

The Genesis says recycle as low as 1 sec which implies that speed at lowest power. Wonder what it is at full power. The ability to control power digitally is a plus. The wider the range the better as well. I use AB800s which are 320WS. I rarely have them above 1/2 power with modifiers in a portrait session. Even with a group. I never even think about the recycle time. They just fire. I did a session with a model where both I and my assistant...

Hello, I just got my RF-602 in and would like some input in regards to camera setup as it is non ETTL. I apologize for long post but am still striving to improve and become even more proficient with digital. Typically I shoot in Shutter Priority mode as most comfortable (sports). I will often resort to "portrait" mode for portrait shots or use lens zoom to control background blur. ...

The thing is, I'm not sure if they work for me. I'm just fishing for honest opinions and to maybe hear other people's first experiences with lighting, and see if they were happy or have regrets, you know? I don't want to invest money on a stand and small softbox/umbrella for the Speedlite that I won't be able to use if I upgrade to studios, and end up not using the Speedlite for lack of power.

I've been using mine for about a week with my metz and a vivitar 258. Pretty flawless if you ask me ... Perfect 1/250 sync. Build quality is very good for the price. They could easily charge you twice the price and it would still be a sweet deal.

If you have a fast enough sync speed it is not as hard as it sounds. It will have to be much faster than the 1/200 most cameras alone are capable of though. the new PWs come to mind as they can increase flash speed by anticipating the shutter opening and starting the flash's firing sequence earlier. Or you can get really large flashes and just crank up the juice. Erik

I just bought a boat load of Alien Bees stuff. Check my sig to see all the money I blew... Stuff just arrived and no formal shooting yet. did some test shots just to make sure it all works. The giant umbrella softbox was damaged so when I called today they were super quick to take care of me and are sending out a new one with a call tag for the broken one. I'm pretty stoked on my experience ...

I wonder if anyone who has tried contacting Elinchrom recently has gotten a response. I certainly haven't. Dave, the apollo softbox doesnt work all that well with the bees, there are much more affordable softbox options. I know you want to be able to do double duty with them, but you are basically handicapping your options for the Bees by wanting them to be speedlite compatible.
