Rotating RAW Images
Published (2009-11-28 07:39:00)
IIRC Elements 8 uses an ACR 5.5 plugin - so is up to date with the latest cameras. And yeah it will do rotation. Best bet would be to give it a free trial http://www.adobe.com/products/psprelements/ Once you get used to PS it is quite easy to use - i went from PSP X to CS2 then CS4. Its not that different - a lot of plugin are shared.

I guess I tried too many new things at once. Maybe I should just stick with Portrait Mode. Those pictures were better.

Flash becomming useless ?
Published (2009-11-28 18:15:00)
Flash today is less necessary than in the days of film, in terms of the situations which supplemental lighting is necessary, but flash still makes shots possible that could not be executed with available light only.

From the EXIF data on that second pic, it was shot 165mm at f/2.8 (probably a 70-200 f/2.8L lens). This is why it's got the nice shallow depth of field blurred background. Looks like sharpening was added and some other post processing. Maybe

I would start with aperature priority if you are just trying to capture the planes, start with iso 100 or 200 depending on the available light, go higher if it is cloudy so you can keep your shutter speed up.
Now this may be tough with such small planes, but when shooting full sized prop plans you typically want to shoot with a slow enough shutter so the prop is blurred helping to show speed ...

I'd caution that there needs to be some knowledgeable review, to prevent
errors of 'fact' that can be stated as true but which aren't true at all.

1.) AF points have nothing to do with the background blur. The AF point (singular) determines what will in focus. Why is everything blurry? The large aperture!
2.) To minimize noise use a lower ISO and use a flash. For low light conditions indoors learn how to use the camera in manual (to set the shutter speed higher) and learn how to bounce the flash instead of direct flash so the ...

Welcome to POTN and congrats on your new gear. Great question too! The best book to buy first is Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson. You will find it at almost any large bookstore.....read it two or three times before you buy the second book

DSLR Digital Photography Vs. SLR Film Photography.
There's no way I would EVER want to go back to film EVER.
There's really not one single thing I miss about film.
I really reckon we've got it made with digital. It's just perfect for the instant gratification world we live in. You get to combine photography and computers....how much better can it get than that
Would you like ...

I'm starting to understand, after shooting for so long, you start to
critique your work too much thus can almost always find something wrong.
That makes me feel a little better. Cause went I went to the zoo today, I
shot around 300 pics over a 2.5hr trip and was happy with about 10-20% of
them.

John Muir with only his long wool coat and some bisquits in the pocket used to go out in high Sierra Nevada storms for thrills.
The wilds are much safer than "civilization", sure there are some things to know about like preventing hypothermia, watching for rogue waves at the beach, and how to handle wild animal encounters.
I go places I'd never be found if something happened even if I ...

You know your photography crazy when...... you look at the ceiling at night, and think how your eyes have terrible ISO with way too much noise.
