Christine - ask youf vet about using human insulin. You buy it at Walmart or Sams, Novolin NPH (made by Reli-on) and it is $22 a bottle. With a small dog like you have - it will last you well over a month. Many here have started on vetsulin and the ended up changing. I believe that more dogs are on the NPH rather than the vetsulin. You also get your syringes at the pharmacy (no scripts needed in Mich - depends where you live. You need...

Molly had begun to hide under the bench whenever I called to her because she knew I was the one giving the insulin shots . I felt so bad when I called to her to hold her or lift her to sit with me on the couch and she would go hide . So I began using the same hand signal when I wanted her to come and it DIDN'T involve giving her a shot . It's taken over a week but now she gets it . It's so wonderful to have that part of our...

That is funny, Jenny, because I was going to suggest Gabriel, too! I also thought of Gideon and Peter. Andrew (Andy) and Sammi (Samuel) are good biblical names and I thought Peter or Petra (the rock) might work. He will be your rock - to hold you steady while you still mourn for Andy. I'm not sure I like Petey, though, and that's what he would end up! He is so beautiful. I bet he is a little snuggler, too! Remember housebreaking? I...

The shots are supposed to be 12 hours apart? Always? My vet said 7am and 5pm. Should I be waiting 12 hours? If I wake up late...do I push the 2nd 12 hour up also? Oh my this is overwhelming.

more switching insulin questions

Yes- I gave her the vetsulin twice a day and have just duplicated that same schedule- She is eating the same food though I have been told may need more carbs with the NPH- just don't want to make too many changes at once! Her last BS was a 170 at 5pm.... so roughly 12 hours since her last injection. (Her 3:00 was 270) so guess she is peaking a bit later... She ran from 230 (fasting at 7 am) to the high at 3:00- I was able to check about...

She has run of the house during the day along with her buddy my standard poodle. They have water and access to a doggie door. At night she had free roam but was peeing in the house. Once we started putting her in the kennel at night she was holding it until recently. I called the vet and asked to up the insulin. She said no that we could bring her in anytime for a bg test and wait till Monday for the curve. She said she would rather have the...

Hi Jerri She has only just seen a vet this week, sorry but I don't think anyone is ready to give up on her yet, she is 10. Jerri, we must be different as even if this was my dog I would still be trying to find out what the problem was not put him out of his misery - she isn't in any pain (she is the kind of dog who would "tell you") and is content in general but is having accidents and losing weight and is skinny...

From what I have read - many vets mention this at first. Apparently the symptoms mimic each other. Why did you vet say she was 85% sure? Were any tests
done? There are signs of cushings - one of them is ravenous appetite, pot belly, and exsessive thirst. See how some of these are like diabetes also, with the
exception of the pot belly. Does she have the belly?
Please don't be upset. ...

What a handsome boy he is! Welcome! Cataracts are not normally painful. Some dogs require eye drops because their eyes get dry. My dog Taffy went blind 6
mts after dx. I kept asking my vet about her eyes and he kept telling me they were fine. Then the day came that I saw the cloudiness and I could tell she
couldn't see very well. It broke my heart - however....it was what it was. We ...

Hi and welcome!!
Could you give us more information : your pooch's name, age, weight, type insulin, dose of insulin and x per day, food . Has curve been done? ( curve is
all day testing every 2 hours to see how the food/insulin is metabolizing). Is your little one spayed? What was bg reading at dx?
I see your avatar.. is she a bichon or Maltese by any chance? ( my Missy was a little Maltese...

Congrats on the new addition Anne. If it seemed right to you - then it was! He's a lucky guy to have a great family to love him, complete with a brother

Right OK
She is only on insulin ONCE day now - the teatime one was dropped - it is 3 units in the morning only. The exact reading at 8.50pm tonight was 4.7 (which is 85
in your numbers) - if that was Zeno he would be lower than normal but I would inject him after half an hour defo. I am wondering if she is taking a big
increase in the morning and flying high, thus losing weight, drinking lots...

Welcome Angie and Cassie!!! Big deep breath! You can do this just fine. First, a few questions:
What breed is Cassie?
How much does she weigh?
What type of insulin is she getting?
Do you live in the U.S? Some of the dog food brands are not familiar to me.
Yes, she does have to be fed every 12 hours - the same type and amount of food at each meal. There are some things that ...

You can buy them at any drugstore or pharmacy. The best ones to get are ketodiastix. These will measure both sugar and ketones. Ketones appear in the urine
when the body, unable to process food because of no insulin, begins to digest muscle! Ewwwww! If this is happening - and I don't think it is - there will
also be an unusual odor to the dog's breath. Almost sweet. There are several ...

The more fiber in the food, the long is takes to digest & that usually works better with the action of the insulin. Picture a normal insulin curve, then
picture a digestion curve, with the digestion curve peaking sooner than the insulin curve. You want to get the food to match your dog's reaction to the
insulin. So you may want to try adding some more fiber to his diet, either with a different ...

Ahhh tell your husband ....so sweet to do that!!!! Refresh my memory..how much does Macy weigh? 1 1/2 and 2 units is a very small amt. Nick weighs 17 and I am
now giving him 7 units twice per day. He also gets a cup every meal. He is too thin but that is all he will eat and my other diabetic did the same thing. Never
could get an answer why????? Is she on NPH? Sorry i read so many and forget!!!!!...
