Stomach Vacuum
Published (2009-12-02 02:11:00)
Well, if you are doing it right, body weight can keep you busy for a while - Cosgrove wrote in his "Body as a Barbell" workout that most lifters would do well to go back and start with body weight... as long as it stays challenging for you. If you want to try it, there's no harm in doing the vacuum. I didn't know if you were coming at it from the "I don't want to control diet or exercise - just do this"...

Cardio
Published (2009-12-02 00:32:00)
Do you have any suggestions for cardio?  I'm rural the closest gym is 90 miles away. I have low arches and almost pulled/tore a tendon in my foot.  So, I have to be careful running or walking.  Oh and I'm 50 pounds overweight and hesitant to run.   There is no public pool here but several lakes here that are probably very cold right now.   1 Reply ( last )

1% incline
Published (2009-12-01 16:34:00)
Original Post by dlish22 : if you don't mind me asking, I have not heard anything about running on a 1% incline, can you shed some light about the negatives or positives for doing this?? Thanks so much! Treadmills aren't as difficult to run on as when you are propelling yourself forward and the muscles work in slightly different ways. The idea is that 1% should be enough to make your treadmill run more like a natural run, but many...

run at at least 3 %. It's the most equivalent to running on a relative flat surface outside. I would also recommend alternating the incline and speed as you run since interval training is much better for your heart/lungs and burns more cals!

The idea isn't to discourage people from running altogether - that would be odd since Rachel is a triathlete, figure competitor and coach who makes a living from coaching people - including runners.  The idea is to tell people to be a bit more cautious about starting to run than to throw on any broken-down old shoe and head out the door at top speed by following a sane training plan and doing some crosstraining - because people...

Is lifting weights enough cardio?
Published (2009-11-29 14:17:00)
Original Post by floggingsully : Original Post by azdak : As I mentioned in an earlier post, the mechanism for increase HR during cardiovascular endurance exercise is different than during heavy resistance exercise. The latter is often due to a pressure load on the heart, whereas the former involves a volume load (i.e. increase cardiac output). During strength training, increased heart rate is NOT a reliable indicator that cardiovascular...

I'm not pretending Honestly I know that you are correct and I just made an appointment to see my internist this afternoon (insted of going to the Y). My whole right leg has been giving me problems since I started running. First was shin splints in both legs then my RT knee was really bad for a few weeks then after that got better my hip began to get soreness. It's like in plumbing, you fix a leak in old pipe and all that happens is...

$700? I'd definitely get an AirDyne. Way better than elliptical or treadmill, unless you want to run. And in that case, I'd go outside.

I believe it to be a matter of personal choice. For me, I have had two surgeries on my knee. It was reccomended to me that I use the elliptical because it is "low-impact". I actually find it hurts my knee worse than a treadmill because it throws it out of the natural alignment. (I feel like I have to step wider than I normally would.) Go to a place that has them both and try them. See what ...

I go through phases.. where I work out intensely everyday for 3 days then get sore and stop working out for the next month... So lately I've been going to the gym and doing really light workouts (10 minutes on the elliptical, 5 minutes of arm workouts, 5 minute abs, 20 minutes walking to/from the gym) I'm more motivated to go to the gym if I only go for a short time. I'm fairly out of ...

I work out because: - It increases my energy 10 fold! - Its exhillerating - I love a good sweat session - I get to gossip with my girlfriend - I get to wear next to nothing and not get yelled at - I feel so incredibly healthy it's rediculous - I do it to look good & build muscle tone - I need to increase my bone mass (as we ALL do!)

I don't really have much advice in terms of what to do, but just wanted to make sure that you know that building muscle does not necessarily mean gaining inches, or replacing inches of fat with inches of muscle. What I have done in the past is have a few days one week where I'll use the elliptical at a fairly high resistance at a slightly slower pace, and then go for about a week at a low/...

You need to make sure that you are eating a calorie deficit to lose weight. As long as you have a deficit you don't have to worry about gaining any new muscle or fat. Use the rowing machine if you like it.

Okay, I'll start the party rolling. I haven't been doing so well in getting on the rower for a couple of months now. It's time to get back to it. I've always admired people who run for exercise, but I'm very hesitant to try it for myself. About me: I'm 24 years old. 5'3 and 173lbs. BMI of 30.6. I'm on day 56 of my weightloss journey, 6lbs down, and looking for new ways to incorporate physical activity into my life. Currently, I've been hiking, biking, elliptical walking, and doing some lifting. I was athletic as a teenager; I was ...

Hi, I have been working out at gyms religiously for the last 5 years. I have enough money saved up that I am considering buying either a treadmill or an elliptical for my apartment. Budget being up to $700. I have heard good things about Schwinn ellipticals and NordicTrack audioblaster ellipticals. What do you own? How is the quality? Is it loud? (I have neighbors and thin walls). And...

I am finding it really hard to do my cardio after working out. I usually do 15 minutes before lifting, but then when I go to do the final 15-20 minutes of cardio after lifting I want to throw up within 2 minutes. I have been lifting heavy weights (I think), 50 lbs on the squat bar, 180 on the leg press, 60 on the flyaway (where you arms are out to the side and you pull your arms together). ...
